Notes: Summary The responses of single spindle primary afferents in medial gastrocnemius muscle to passive extension of the muscle were compared in adult cats between controls, acutely decerebellate (DB), chronically DB, and chronic, congenitally ataxic (CA) animals, to determine the degree of restitution (“compensation”) of responses in the chronic groups. It was found that chronically DB cats exhibit considerable compensation of spindle afferent responses when compared with those of acutely DB cats, and that responses of CA cats demonstrate compensation similar to those of the chronically DB animals. However, de-efferentation of spindle receptors by section of either lumbosacral cord or ventral roots innervating the spindles results in a significant depression of spindle responses in controls and in chronically and acutely DB animals, but does not alter the responses in CA animals. The degree of depression of responses resulting from de-efferentation is related directly to the degree of increased firing threshold to passive muscle stretch. It is concluded that the compensatory mechanisms in the DB animals depend upon fusimotor-gamma innervation from the central nervous system, but in the CA animals the compensatory processes must occur within, the intrafusal muscle or nerve fiber itself.

Notes: Abstract The prevalence of asthma and respiratory symptoms in south-central Durban, one of the most heavily polluted areas of South Africa, has been determined using a cross-sectional survey of 213 households in the communities of Merewent (97% Indians) and Austerville (98% coloreds). The study population consisted of 367 children (less than 17 years old) and 693 adults. About 10% of the children and 12% of adults reported doctor diagnosed asthma. The self-reported prevalence rates for wheezing (37–40%) and attacks of shortness of breath with wheeze (16–28%) were much higher than that for doctor diagnosed asthma and common co-occurrence of the three symptoms is found. The prevalence rates for other respiratory symptoms include 33–35% for chronic cough, 31–32% for chronic phlegm, 44–50% for frequent blocked-runny nose, and 16–27% for sinusitis. Factors in the community that were associated with asthma, wheeze and shortness of breath with wheeze among the adult population included cigarette smoking, use of insecticides (coils and pump spray) and home ownership. An association between asthma among children and a number of household risk factors including dampness, carpet, pets or use of pesticides was not apparent in the community. Asthma prevalence was strongly correlated with missing of school by children (odds ratio (OR): 44; 95% confidence interval (CI): 13–141). The study serves to draw attention to a growing but neglected public health problem in urban areas of Africa.

Notes: The circular dicrosim (CD) spectra of complexes of DNA with ethidiun bromnide, profiavine, 9-aminoacridine and 4-etliyl-9-amino-acridine have been determined between 220 and 450 nm, the range lieing extended to 600 nm for ethidiufm bromide. The variation of the magnitude of the visible and near - ultraviolet CD spectra of ethidium bromide - DNA complexes with the amount of ligand bound (r) suggests a common binding position with profiavine. On the other hand, 4-ethyl-9-aminoacndine complexed to DNA shows CD spectra not distinguishable from those of 9-aminnoacnidmc in both the visible and ultraviolet. The interpretation of these results with respect to the stereochemistry of the DNA-ligand complexes is discussed.
