    Notizen: Different polyurea-amides were synthesized by interfacial polymerization of acid chloride, diamine, and diisocyanate. The polymers and the membranes were characterized for their RO/UF applications. Highly porous membranes could be prepared from the sulfuric acid-based casting formulation and the membrane casting conditions were established. The resulting membranes are not asymmetric as they give high permeability to water and salt solutions. They are found to be resistant to many organic solvents, thus making them useful in concentration/separation applications. Whole milk, egg albumin and Na-alginate were found to be rejected 100% by these membranes, while solutes of about 20,000 Mw are found to be rejected to the extent of 70-80%.

    Notizen: Synthesis of polyurea by interface polymerization of diisocyanate and diamine for preparation of polymer membrane for use in separation problems was investigated. A sulfuric-acid-based casting formulation was developed for the polymer prepared from 1,6-hexamethylene diamine and 1,6-hexamethylene diisocyanate. The resulting membrane is porous and highly permeable to water. However, salt rejection was found to be 〈20%, while high molecular weight solutes like milk, papain, and Na-alginate were found to be rejected 100%. The membrane is more like a sieve structure with the absence of an asymmetric layer. It is found to be resistant to many organic solvents, thus making it suitable for use in ultrafiltration applications.

    Notizen: This paper describes the swelling of cotton fiber in cadoxen containing 4.6% cadmium (w/w) and 30% ethylenediamine (w/w). A special neutral salt technique is described involving the analysis of extract as well as mother liquor which enables the determination of mechanically held liquor and hence the values of true absorption. The percentage true weight swelling values are much lower than the percentage apparent weight swelling as measured by centrifuge technique. The effect of variation in material-to-liquor ratio on the true absorption of cadmium and ethylenediamine is also investigated.

    Notizen: Electron-beam-induced conductivity (EBIC) studies were carried out on fluorinated ethylene propylene copolymer (FEP) and its acrylonitrile graft copolymer (FEP-g-AN). The current transport parallel to the surface under the influence of an electron beam of medium energy (6-30 keV) is reported. The gain in EBIC is calculated and its characteristic variation as a function of beam energy is studied. Minima in the gain versus energy curves have been obtained around 21 keV for FEP, 12 and 18 keV for FEP-g-AN, and 12 keV for polyacrylonitrile (PAN). This behavior is explained by assuming the existence of electron trapping bands close to the surface, at characteristic distances below the surface of the polymeric film corresponding to the range of incident electrons. Gains of the order of 5, 12, and 30 have been obtained respectively for FEP, FEP-g-AN, and PAN for the maximum energy of incident electrons used.

    Notizen: This paper describes the experimental setup for evaluation of pyrotechnic smoke compositions for anti-laser and anti-infrared roles using the continuous wave 10.6 μm CO2 laser (4 watt) and presents the results for a few pyrotechnic smoke compositions. The particle sizes of the aerosol from pyrotechnic smoke compositions were also determined using Quartz crystal Microbalance - Cascade Impactor. Two smoke compositions containing hexachloroethane, anthracene/naphthalenee, potassium perchlorate and magnesium powder showed more than 97% attenuation of CO2 laser, whereas a composition containing zinc oxide, aluminium, iron oxide along with hexachlorocthane was least effective.
