Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Es wird über 4 Fälle mit Thoraxdysplasie-Polydaktylie-Syndromen berichtet.
Notes: Abstract Four examples of short rib-polydactyly syndromes are described. Case 1 represents the Majewski type, and the other three are examples of the Saldino-Noonan type. Both conditions are true multiple congenital anomaly syndromes and neonatally lethal forms of dwarfism with a narrow thorax, polydactyly and associated visceral malformations. They are probably caused by the homozygous state of different autosomal recessive genes. They must be differentiated from similar conditions such as chondroectodermal dysplasia, asphyxiating thoracic dysplasia, the Meckel syndrome and the trisomy 13 syndrome. The short rib-polydactyly syndrome type Majewski is characterized by thoracic dystrophy, pre- and postaxial polydactyly, mesomelic brachymelia and cleft lip and/or palate. Skull, vertebral column and pelvis are not markedly affected. Associated features include polycystic kidneys, hypolastic epiglottis and lungs, and various malformations of the cardiovascular system, genitalia and the central nervous system. The short rib-polydactyly syndrome type Saldino-Noonan is characterized by thoracic dystrophy, postaxial polydactyly, severely shortened, flipper-like extremities and a striking metaphyseal dysplasia of the tubular bones. The ossification of the calvaria, vertebral column, pelvis and short bones of the hands and feet is defective. Associated features occurring in varying frequency include polycystic kidneys, transposition of the great vessels and atretic lesions of the gastrointestinal and genitourinary systems.

Notes: Abstract This paper reports sporadic occurrence of the Pfeiffer syndrome with Kleeblattschädel (KS) in a male infant who died at 6 months of pneumonia with signs of increased intracranial pressure and who was found to have hydrocephalus, polymicrogyria, cerebellar herniation, bicuspid aortic valve, a common mesentery, absence of lesser omentum, hypplasia of gallbladder, a single umbilical artery, and multiple eye defects. This case is presumed to represent a new mutation: in other families the Pfeiffer syndrome has been dominantly inherited. The Pfeiffer syndrome is a form of acrocephalosyndactyly and impresses clinically as a mild form of the Apert syndrome. The Kleeblattschädel is an etiologically non-specific developmental field defect (DFC); about two fifths of 51 known cases have apparent thanatophoric dwarfism and about one fifth are probable or possible examples of the Pfeiffer syndrome. The KS-DFC has also been seen in the syndromes of Carpenter, Apert and Crouzon.

Notes: The hydrolytic stability of glass fiber reinforced poly(butylene terephthalate) (PBT), poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) and polycarbonate (PC) was studied. The activation energies in kcal/mole for hydrolysis are 26 for PBT and 23 for PET. Both PBT and PET contain 30 percent glass fiber reinforcement. The hydrolysis rates for a series of experimental PC's containing 10, 30 and 40 percent glass were obtained from GPC data. These increase with glass concentration but are lower than that of the unreinforced PC. Melt flow rate changes are a good measure of the hydrolytic degradation of PET. However, in the time scale of these experiments, the tensile properties of glass reinforced PBT and PC do not correlate well with M̄w changes, unlike unreinforced PBT and PC polymers. Consequently, to compare these three glass fiber reinforced polymers, estimates of failure time must be based on changes in tensile strength rather than melt flow rate.

Notes: The chemical ionization mass spectra of a series of simple peptides containing six or fewer amino acids have been studied. Using methane as the reactant gas we found cleavage of the peptide bond occurs in two ways, yielding either the acyl carbonium ion or the complementary ammonium ion. The observation of both types of fragments permits the determination of the amino acid sequence of the peptide. The ammonium ions provide an additional sequence determining route compared to that available from electron-impact spectra. ‘Sequence-determing ions,’ especially the quasimolecular ion at m/e [M+1] are usually more intense than in the electron-impact mass spectra.

Notes: The presence of a p-bromoaniline initiator fragment in polyglycine formed from N-carboxyglycine anhydride has been confirmed by bromine and infrared analyses. Carius halogen analyses, sodium fusions, and Beilstein halogen tests prove the presence of bromine in the polymer. Both the per cent bromine and the per cent amino nitrogen data specify essentially the same molecular weight, 1500-1700, for the polymer. Per cent yield of polymer data provide a second-order catalytic constant for p-bromoaniline-initiated polyglycine in dioxane at 37°C. of 1.8 × 10-3 l. mole-1 sec.-1 for the first 51% of the reaction, and the calculated constant beyond that falls off rather rapidly.

Notes: The conversion of N-carboxyglycine anhydride in dioxane to polyglycine has been completely inhibited with as little as 0.2 mole-%, based on monomer, of acetyl chloride, thionyl chloride, 2,2′-dichloro-N-methyldiethylamine hydrochloride, and AlCl3. Phenyl isocyanate and acetic anhydride also show strong inhibition. Myleran, and especially its 1,9-relative, 1,9-dimethylsulfonyloxynonane, show similar action at slightly higher concentrations. The most active inhibitors have in common a strong tendency to react with initiators such as water, alcohols, or amines.

Notes: HAB is a thermally- and hydrolytically-stable solid, easily prepared from available raw materials. It is not highly sensitive to shock, friction, or electrostatic charge, but is sensitive to some types of impact, although not to others. It shows preliminary promise for possible use as a substitute for normal lead styphnate in less-sensitive bridgewire detonators, and as a substitute for tetracene in percussion detonators, e.g. the M-42 primer. Easy ignition, and a high burning rate without detonation, suggest application as an igniter. HAB is not sufficiently powerful to dent an aluminum witness block; therefore, it would not be suitable as a replacement for lead azide as an intermediate detonator charge.

Notes: Pure sodium 2,4-dinitrotoluene-3-sulfonate and -5-sulfonate were prepared, and a procedure was developed for their extraction (as a mixture) from TNT purification waste water (‘red water’). Reactions of the sulfonates were studied, with special emphasis on possible direct and indirect methods for desulfonating them to 2,4-DNT. Other reactions studied included reduction of one or both nitro groups, followed by desulfonation, yielding 2-amino-4-nitrotoluene and 2,4-diamino-toluene, respectively, and replacement of the sulfonate group by chlorine, hydroxyl, and various substituted amino groups. Most of these reactions with the pure sulfonates were also applied to the corresponding TNT isomers, and in some cases directly to stabilized red water.
