Notes: Abstract The requirement to suppress narrowband interferences in CDMA communication stems from the overlay concept, i.e., coexistence of different types of signals in the same frequency band. This paper describes the performance analysis of a direct-sequence (DS) CDMA personal communication system sharing a common spectrum with narrowband microwave radio links in the 1.85 to 1.99 GHz band. The coexistence of these two systems within the same frequency band will improve the overall spectrum efficiency, but will also cause interference to both systems. In this paper it is shown that joint spatial and temporal optimum combining provides an efficient means of improving the performance of the DS-CDMA system through cancellation of the narrowband signal and the co-channel interferences. The proposed space-time architecture provides degrees of freedom for both diversity and interference cancellation. It is shown that the joint space-time receiver is robust with respect to the narrowband interference signal bandwidth and its carrier frequency offset from the DS-CDMA carrier frequency.

Notes: Stepwise fatigue crack propagation in a range of polyethylene resins, some of which are candidates for use in pipes for natural gas distribution, was studied. Examination of the effect of molding conditions on fatigue crack propagation in a pipe resin indicated that fast cooling under pressure produced specimens with the same crack resistance as specimens taken from a pipe extruded from this resin. The mechanism of stepwise crack propagation in fatigue was the same as reported previously for creep loading. Observations of the region ahead of the arrested crack revealed a complex damage zone that consisted of a thick membrane at the crack tip followed by a main craze with subsidiary shear crazes that emerged from the crack tip at an angle to the main craze. The effects of molecular parameters, such as molecular weight, comonomer content, and branch distribution, on the kinetics of fatigue crack propagation were examined. Correlation of creep and fatigue crack resistance made it possible to relate fatigue fracture toughness to molecular parameters by invoking concepts of craze fibril stability developed for creep. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Notes: The polymerization of N-vinylcarbazole has been carried out at 60°C under nitrogen with different grades of carbon black, N220, N110, N330, and N660 as heterogeneous catalysts. The order of efficiency of the catalysts in regard to the polymerization is: N220 〉 N110 〉 N660 〉 N330. Effect of solvent polarity on the polymerization has been studied with acetonitrile, 1,2-dichloroethane, and toluene-nitrobenzene mixtures. Nitrobenzene, with highest polarity, affords the highest rate, which decreases with decreasing nitrobenzene percentage in the solvent mixture. These features suggest the polymerization to be cationic in nature. The relative viscosities of the polymers are low, but tend to increase only slightly with increasing nitrobenzene content. The rate of polymerization can be expressed by the relation \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$$ - \frac{{{\rm d}\left[ {\rm M} \right]}}{{{\rm dt}}} = k_1 [{\rm M}]{\rm [Carbon Black]} $$\end{document} A suitable kinetic model has been presented in conformity with the experimental findings.
