    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung 114 am Institut für Rechtsmedizin der Universität Zürich von 1989–1997 untersuchte Todesfälle mit positivem Methadonnachweis wurden retrospektiv analysiert. 44 der 114 Personen befanden sich zum Zeitpunkt ihres Todes in einem Methadonprogramm. In 73 Fällen lag eine Mischvergiftung bei Polytoxikomanie vor. Die häufigsten zusätzlich konsumierten Substanzen waren Benzodiazepine, Trinkalkohol und Opioide. In 25 Fällen wurde autoptisch eine andere Todesursache (z. B. Infektion, Unterkühlung) gefunden. 12 Fälle ließen sich auf eine reine Methadonintoxikation (relative Überdosis) zurückführen. In 4 Fällen kamen die Verstorbenen durch mechanische Gewalt zu Tode (Verkehrsunfall, Strangulation, Sturz, Schuß). Keine Person verstarb während eines streng geregelt verlaufenden Methadonprogramms.
    Notes: Abstract We reviewed 114 fatalities investigated at the Institute of Legal Medicine of Zurich from 1989 to 1997 where methadone was detected. Of these 44 persons were enrolled in a methadone program at the time of death. Polydrug toxicity was the leading cause of death (n = 73) and the most frequently abused drugs were benzodiazepines, alcohol and opioids. In 25 cases the autopsy revealed another cause of death (e.g. infection, freezing to death) and 12 cases could be related to a “methadone only” intoxication (relative overdose). In four cases death was the result of mechanical violence (traffic accident, strangulation, fall, shooting). No person died during a strictly regulated methadone program.
