Summary The RF values were obtained for etioporphyrin I (H2Etio) and its vanadyl, nickel and copper complexes on cellulose, silica gel, and octyl-bonded silica HPTLC plates, with various organic solvents. The mobility of these compounds tends to increase in the following order: (1) on cellulose, VOEtio 〈 H2Etio 〈 CuEtio ≤ NiEtio; (2) on silica gel, H2Etio 〈 VOEtio 〈 NiEtio ≤ CuEtio; (3) on octyl-bonded silica, CuEtio 〈 NiEtio 〈 VOEtio and the apparent mobility of H2Etio relative to metal-Etio complexes depends on the developing solvent used. Complete separation of these four Etio compounds can be accomplished on an octyl-bonded silica plate with either methanol or acetone.
