    Notes: Abstract  Ehlers-Danlos type VIII is a rare disorder characterized by soft, hyperextensible skin, abnormal scarring, easy bruising, and generalized periodontitis with early loss of teeth. To illustrate the clinical dermatological and dental features, we present the case history of a 20-year-old patient who has suffered from poor healing of wounds at the shins and knees since childhood, which have developed into hyperpigmented atrophic scars. In the course of orthodontic treatment during the last 3 years, severe apical root resorption, gingival recession, and loss of alveolar bone were observed. Family history was noncontributory for any skin or tooth disorders. The typical clinical signs confirmed the diagnosis of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome type VIII. As there is no specific treatment for the disorder, management is limited to the symptomatic treatment of the dental disease. It seems advisable to consider carefully the indications for orthodontic treatment in patients with Ehlers-Danlos type VIII syndrome.

    Notes: Summary Relapsing polychondritis is an infrequently diagnosed, though not neccessarily uncommon, systemic disorder characterized by recurrent and potentially destructive inflammation of cartilaginous structures, the eye, and the audiovestibular and cardiovascular systems. Although dermal involvement occurs in approximately 25% of patients with relapsing polychondritis, in only few cases has a skin biopsy been obtained revealing lesions such as leukocytoclastic vasculitis, livedo reticularis, erythema nodosum or keratodermia blenorrhagicum. We describe a patient with relapsing polychondritis in whom a cutaneous polyarteritis nodosa preceded cartilage inflammation by 6 months. Cutaneous polyarteritis nodosa is a rare form of vasculitis that appears to be limited primarily to the skin, muscles, and joints. In contrast to the systemic form of the disease it is characterized by the absence of visceral lesions and a relapsing but benign course. The present case and the fact that vasculitis is a concomitant feature in approximately 30% of patients with relapsing polychondritis [21] demonstrates that this condition may not represent a distinct clinical entity.

    Notes: Summary Five patients with pityriasis rubra pilaris (PRP) were analyzed by means of light and electron microscopy as well as by histochemistry and autoradiography. The results were compared with findings in psoriasis vulgaris. In PRP we found a moderate increase of the labeling index of epidermal cells, a highly increased labeling index of dermal infiltrating cells, and a mild spongiosis, and in the stratum granulosum, a decreased number of tonofilaments and an increased number of keratinosomes. The horny layer in PRP showed a pronounced histochemical and electron microscopical parakeratosis, even when histological parakeratosis was absent. In contrast with psoriasis vulgaris, there was no exocytosis of polymorphonuclear leucocytes into the epidermis, the papillomatosis index was normal, and there were no tortuous capillaries in the dermal papillae. The stratum granulosum was always present and sometimes thickened, showing electron microscopical changes different from those referred to in psoriasis. These changes point to a relatively distinct pattern of epidermal changes in PRP.

    Description / Table of Contents: Summary We compared a cw carbon dioxide flash-scanning laser system to an Er:YAG laser in laser skin resurfacing of facial rhytides. In all patients, CO2 laser treatment showed a better cosmetic result whereas erythema and postinflammatory hyperpigmentation were less marked in Er:YAG laser therapy.
    Notes: Zusammenfassung Anhand einer klinischen Studie vergleichen wir einen cw-CO2-Laser mit Scannersystem mit einem Er:YAG-Laser hinsichtlich Wirksamkeit und Nebenwirkungsspektrum bei der Laser-Faltenbehandlung. Bei sämtlichen behandelten Patienten zeigte sich der CO2-Laser bezüglich des kosmetischen Endergebnisses dem Er:YAG-Laser deutlich überlegen. Erythem und postinflammatorische Hyperpigmentierung als in jedem Fall reversible Nebenwirkungen waren beim Er:YAG-Laser dagegen deutlich geringer ausgeprägt als beim CO2-Laser.
