    Notes: Summary The steady state pharmacokinetics of pirmenol was compared in twelve healthy young (aged 18 to 45 y) and 11 elderly subjects (over 65 y) subjects given pirmenol HCl 100 mg every 12 h for a total of 14 doses. In addition, the single-dose pharmacokinetics of pirmenol was determined following a 100 mg oral dose in the young subject group for comparison with the results of repeated administration. In the young subjects, the mean single-dose and steady-state CLR of pirmenol were similar; however, Ae was 29 % higher and CL/f was 22 % lower at steady state than after the single dose. Steady-state (fourteenth dose) Cmin, Cmax, tmax, λz, Ae, CL/f, CLR and V values were similar in the young and elderly subjects. Based on pharmacokinetic considerations, the dosage of pirmenol is unlikely to differ in young and elderly subjects.

    Notes: Sensilla diversity and abundance were extremely high on the apex of the maxillary and labial palpi of two species of Gryllacrididae. The terminal segment of the maxillary palpi of these species had 9 and 15 sensilla types, respectively, and up to 2,834 sensilla. The labial palpi had 7 and 12 types, respectively, and up to 5,195 sensilla. Several types of multiporous smooth and ridged olfactory basiconic sensilla, and coeloconic, coelosphaeric, placoid, and multipapilliform sensilla occurred, as well as many trichoid sensilla and the more typical uniporous basiconic contact receptors. Two species of the closely related Stenopelmatidae were compared to the gryllacridids and found to have similar sensillar diversity and abundance, but three species of the more distantly related Tettigoniidae had only 4 or 5 sensilla types and a total number ranging from 320 to 960 on their maxillary palpi.

    Notes: The long (49-93 mm) antennae of two species of Australian gryllacridids have high total numbers of sensilla consisting of five sensillar types. Ametrus sp. 7 has 22,300 (♀) and 26,250 (♂) sensilla; although the antennae of males are 33% longer than those of females, their sensillar density was 11% less. Bothriogryllacris pinguipes has 26,700 (♂) and 31,900 (♀) sensilla; antennae of females are 55% longer than those of males but sensillar density is 23% less. Aporous sensilla chaetica form 94.5 to 99.5% of all sensilla; they are presumably mechanoreceptors. Uniporous trichoid contact chemoreceptors range from 75-900 in number. Olfactory, multiporous, basiconic sensilla range from 22-440 and olfactory, coeloconic sensilla from 16-235. Two to five multiporous lenticular organs occur on all but female A. sp. 7. Differences in sensillar abundance between males and females are discussed as well as are the relationships between sensillar diversity on gryllacridid mouthparts and antennae. © 1994 Wiley-Liss, Inc.
