Notes: A population-balance-equation model is employed for the analysis of liquid-liquid extraction columns. This model considers drop breakage, coalescence, and exit phenomena for the drop phase caused by drop-drop and drop-continuous phase interactions. Drop breakage and coalescence rates are employed from a previous study on liquid dispersions in stirred-tank contactors. A drop exit frequency is developed based on a stochastic modeling approach. The model is tested by drop size distribution and dispersed-phase volume fraction (holdup) data obtained for a multistage column contactor of pilot-plant scale. Steady-state drop size distribution and transient holdup measurements are obtained by a photomicrographic technique and an ultrasonic technique, respectively. The model can predict flooding of the column. The effect of mass transfer on the hydrodynamic parameters of the contactor is also examined. The population-balance-equation model can be used for the control of extraction columns and can be extended to include mass-transfer calculations for the prediction of extraction efficiency.

Notes: Three-dimensional Stokes flow through a thin screen which has a regular array of holes with two orthogonal axes of symmetry has been studied. The governing equation is simplified by the Roscoe potential and solved by an efficient eigenfunction expansion and collocation method. The resistance is found for circular and square holes in square arrays, and circular and hexagonal holes in triangular arrays.

Notes: The steady diffusion across a constant thickness corrugated barrier is analyzed through the intrinsic coordinate system. Perturbation solutions are found when the thickness is small compared to the minimum radius of curvature. For a given perimeter length, diffusive transfer is decreased, while for given maximum geometric dimensions, diffusive transfer may be increased by corrugations.

Notes: The relative influence of dispersed-phase viscosity and interfacial tension on equilibrium drop size and drop size distribution is studied for dilute suspensions by dispersing various silicone oils in water, methanol, and their solutions. Correlations for Sauter mean diameter, D32, are developed in terms of system variables using the mechanistic models of Part I. Drop sizes for low to moderate viscosity dispersed phases are normally distributed in volume and can be correlated by normalization with D32. Trends in the distributions are explained in terms of a parameter representing the relative resistance to breakage.

Notes: A viscous lamina of given mean thickness flows down a wavy incline. Assuming low Reynolds number and small perturbations due to the wavy striations, the velocity profiles and the free surface profile are determined. It is found that the amplitude and phase shift of the free surface depend, in a complicated manner, on the surface tension and the wave length and orientation of the wavy striations. The motion of a particle on the free surface experiences drift which is also a function of the surface tension, the amplitude, wave length and orientation of the wavy incline.

Notes: In this paper a unified finite element model that contains the Euler-Bernoulli, Timoshenko and simplified Reddy third-order beam theories as special cases is presented. The element has only four degrees of freedom, namely deflection and rotation at each of its two nodes. Depending on the choice of the element type, the general stiffness matrix can be specialized to any of the three theories by merely assigning proper values to parameters introduced in the development. The element does not experience shear locking, and gives exact generalized nodal displacements for Euler-Bernoulli and Timoshenko beam theories when the beam is homogeneous and has constant geometric properties. While the Timoshenko beam theory requires a shear correction factor, the third-order beam theory does not require specification of a shear correction factor. An extension of the work to axisymmetric bending of circular plates is also presented. A stiffness matrix based on the exact analytical form of the solution of the first-order theory of circular plates is derived. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Notes: The bone morphogenetic proteins were originally identified based on their ability to induce ectopic bone formation in vivo and have since been identified as members of the transforming growth factor-β gene superfamily. It has been well established that the bone morphogenetic cytokines enhance osteogenic activity in bone marrow stromal cells in vitro. Recent reports have described how bone morphogenetic proteins inhibited myogenic differentiation of bone marrow stromal cells in vitro. In vivo, bone marrow stromal cells differentiate along the related adipogenic pathway with advancing age. The current work reports the inhibitory effects of the bone morphorphogenetic proteins on adipogenesis in a multipotent murine bone marrow stromal cell line, BMS2. When exposed to bone morphogenetic protein-2, the pre-adipocyte BMS2 cells exhibited the expected induction of the osteogenic-related enzyme, alkaline phosphatase. Following induction of the BMS2 cells with adipogenic agonists, adipocyte differentiation was assessed by morphologic, enzymatic, and mRNA markers. Flow cytometric analysis combined with staining by the lipophilic fluorescent dye, Nile red, was used to quantitate the extent of lipid accumulation within the BMS2 cells. By this morphologic criteria, the bone morphogenetic proteins inhibited adipogenesis at concentrations of 50 to 500 ng/ml. This correlated with decreased levels of adipocyte specific enzymes and mRNAs. The BMS2 pre-adipocytes constitutively expressed mRNA encoding bone morphogenetic protein-4 and this was inhibited by adipogenic agonists. Together, these findings demonstrate that bone morphogenetic proteins act as adipogenic antagonists. This supports the hypothesis that adipogenesis and osteogenesis in the bone marrow microenvironment are reciprocally regulated.

Notes: In this study characteristics of polynorbornene (PNR) and ethylene-propylene terpolymer (EPDM) blends were examined in terms of compatibility, cocuring, and ozone resistance. For most of the blend compositions, two glass transition temperatures (Tg) at about -30 and -50°C were observed from differential scanning calorimetry data for both uncured and cured samples. The transitions correspond to the Tg's of the component polymers, suggesting that the blends are microheterogeneous. The two-phase blends are difficult to cocure as evidenced by the fact that tensile strengths of the blends, when plotted as a function of blend composition, deviate from the linear or additive behavior. Improved cocuring of the blends, however, can be achieved by matching the cure rates of the components. The ozone resistance of the blends containing 25 percent or more EPDM was substantially improved as compared with that of PNR. Therefore, the newly developed PNR can be used for applications requiring ozone resistance by properly blending it with EPDM.
