    Notes: Amorphous poly(ethylene terephthalate) has been solid state coextruded to a series of draw ratios up to 4.4 at 50, 60, 70 and 90°C. These uniaxially drawn samples have been examined by optical microscopy and light scattering and for increases in crystallinity and birefringence as a function of draw ratio and draw temperature. The birefringence for PET may be among the highest yet reported - 0.21.

    Notes: The use of inorganic (glass) fiber reinforcement to enhance the mechanical properties and reduce the anisotropy of in situ composites based on blends of liquid crystalline polymers (LCPs) with polyetherimide (PEI) is discussed. It was found that the tensile and flexural moduli are increased and the anisotropy is reduced with increasing grass content (when compared at equivalent LCP weight fractions). The creep compliance of the PEI/LCP composites is reduced upon the addition of glass fibers. However, the disadvantage is that the processability worsens upon addition of glass fibers to the PEI/LCP in situ composites. The effect of adding glass reinforcement on the ultimate tensile strength is less clear, because the data do not show any consistent trend. Similarly, the elongation at break and toughness do not show any consistent improvement upon addition of glass reinforcement. Morphological studies show that there is considerable difference between the size and texture of the reinforcing glass fibers and LCP microfibrils.

    Notes: The synthesis of the first example of an aromatic pyridine-containing porphyrinoid 10 has been accomplished in excellent yields by the acid-catalyzed “3 + 1” condensation of 3-hydroxy-pyridinedicarboxaldehyde (8) with tri-pyrrane 9. The key intermediate 8 was obtained by the selenium dioxide oxidation of the known biscarbinol 7. The aromaticity of “oxypyriporphyrin” 10 has been confirmed by MS, NMR, IR, and UV/Vis spectroscopy. This system afforded a monocation in 0.2% TFA-chloroform, and a dication was observed in 2% TFA-chloroform; these species also retained macrocyclic aromaticity. Oxypyriporphyrin readily formed the corresponding metal chelates 14a-c by reaction with zinc, copper(II), or nickel(II) acetate, and this observation suggests that there are extensive possibilities for the use of 10 in coordination chemistry. Oxypyriporphyrin and the related semiquinone system oxybenziporphyrin represent the first two members of a new class of aromatic porphyrinoids.

    Notes: The purpose of this work is to use dynamic histomorphometry to evaluate the basic biological mechanisms by which hydroxyapatite/tricalcium phosphate (HA/TCP) implant coatings accelerate bone formation rates. Twenty-five rabbits had an HA/TCP coated cylindrical titanium fiber metal mesh implant surgically placed in the subchondral bone of the proximal tibia and a noncoated implant placed in the contralateral tibia. Twenty-two of these animals had HA/TCP coated cylindrical solid titanium implants placed in the distal femur and an uncoated implant placed in te contraleteral femur. The animals were double labeled with vital stains, and sacrificed at 3, 6, 16, or 26 weeks after surgery. Histomorphometric analyses were done of the bone implant interfaces. Both static and dynamic histomorphometric parameters indicate that HA/TCP coatings stimulate faster bone ingrowth to coated fiber metal implants through the early production of woven bone and by subsequent rapid lamellar bone formation rates. Coated fiber metal implants demonstrated significantly more bone ingrowth than noncoated implants through 16 weeks postimplatatin, but not by 26 weeks, In solid implants, the differences between coated and noncoated implants are less pronouned and not statistically significant, although there is a trend toward increased bone appostion to the surface of the implants over the first 16 weeks following implantation. The clinical significance of these results is that coated implants may allow earlier return to normal weightbearing. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: Results related to the mechanical properties of in situ composites based on partially miscible blends of polyetherimide (Ultem) and liquid crystalline polymers (HX1000 and HX4000) are discussed. It is observed that, at least in terms of the tensile and flexural modulus, there is a positive deviation from the law of mixtures. These results are analyzed and an attempt is made to explain the origin of this synergistic behavior based upon morphological data. The behavior of these partially miscible systems is compared to that of an immiscible system (Ultem/Vectra) and also that of glass-reinforced Ultem. Using blends subjected to two passes through a single screw extruder, and thereby increasing the mixing history of the Ultem/HX4000 blend, led to improved dispersion but did not lead to any measurable improvement, within experimental error, in the tensile modulus or ultimate strength (though the toughness was enhanced). The dynamic creep compliance was measured and the creep behavior with composition and temperature is discussed. The data seem to suggest that a number of factors (including partial miscibility, the properties of the specific LCP chosen as the reinforcement and the final blend morphology) all interact in a complex and as yet undetermined manner to produce the enhanced mechanical properties.
