Notizen: Simulated countercurrent chromatography is a continuous flow method for separation of binary mixtures or for separation of multicomponent mixtures into two fractions. Countercurrent flow is simulated by moving the feed point past several fixed adsorbent beds at a rate between the single column breakthrough time of each component. The number of columns and the location of the inlet and outlet port were varied to investigate product purity and productivity. Concentration profiles of the effluent product streams were measured. The maximum product concentration exceeds the feed concentration during part of the feed-switching cycle and drops to zero during part of the cycle. Three configurations were tested with the total number of columns varying between three and eight. For the test separation chosen, gaseous propylene and dimethyl ether on Chromosorb 101, high purity (〉 99%) product streams were obtained with an optimal four-column configuration using three desorbent streams.

Notizen: Deterministic analyses applied to both velocity and concentration fluctuation data obtained in a region extremely close to air-water interface in a free-surface, unbaffled stirred tank allow estimation of the length and the velocity scales of individual eddies taking part in gas absorption. The mass transfer prediction by this method is superior to that by a statistical method using an integral length scale in the low-turbulence flow employed in this work. Eddy velocities are generally lower in the diffusion boundary layer zone compared with the bulk zone. Small eddies are generally associated with low velocity scales whereas large eddies occur at high velocity scales. Local mass transfer coefficients are high in regions where small eddies are dominant.

Notizen: An experimental investigation of the hydrodynamics at the surface region of the liquid reveals that the soluble surfactants (sodium lauryl sulfate, glucose oxidase, and bovine serum albumin) affect both the length and the velocity scales of liquid eddies approaching the surface, which results in a decrease in mass transfer.

Notizen: Experimental results on reactions forming polyurethanes and polyurethane-polyester Interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) are discussed with particular interest in rheological and kinetic changes before the gel point. In the IPN formation, viscosity rise is affected by the amount of styrene and polyester in the reaction system. Plots of reduced viscosity vs. conversion do not fall into a single curve. The results may be explained by the concept of having intra-molecular reaction or ring formation. The existence of hydroxyl group at the end of polyester molecule causes the graft reaction between the polyurethane phase and the polyester phase, which may speed up the viscosity rise of the reactive system. A simple method which based on rheological measurements only is proposed. This method of plotting reduced viscosity vs. reduced reaction time provides similar results as in the plots of reduced viscosity vs. conversion.
