Notes: High-purity distillation columns are typically difficult to control because of their severely nonlinear behavior reflected by their sharp composition and temperature profiles. The dynamic behavior of such a column, as characterized by the movement of its sharp profile, was elucidated by a nonlinear wave theory established previously. With binary alcohol mixtures, this study provides an experimental observation of such wave-propagation dynamics of a 40-tray stripping column and a 50-tray fractionation column in response to step disturbances of feed composition, feed flow rate, and reboiler heat supply. Our experimental results have verified that the sharp profile in a high-purity column moves as a constant-pattern wave and that the nonlinear wave theory predicts its velocity satisfactorily with very simple mathematics. Our results also demonstrate the asymmetric dynamics of the transitions between two steady states.

Notes: The Bodenstein approximation for trace-level intermediates is used to reduce multistep reaction-kinetic networks of arbitrary topology and size to simpler forms with only pseudosingle steps between nodes and to derive explicit equations for formation or consumption rates of end members. Networks with nontrace intermediates or steps of higher orders in intermediates must be broken at the respective steps into portions to which the procedure can then be applied separately. A recipe is provided with which rate and yield-ratio equations are readily compiled for networks of arbitrary configuration and complexity. The method is illustrated with an example of a reaction of industrial interest.

Notes: The concepts of coherence and composition paths, originally developed for multicomponent chromatography, are used to establish a simple theory of transport in systems with precipitation and dissolution in the course of multicomponent, single-phase flow in permeable media. Composition route construction in phase diagrams in combination with distance-time diagrams yields concentration profiles without recourse to trial-and-error procedurs. Detailed results are given for systems with three ions A, B, and X and up to two precipitates AX and BX. The extension to systems with additional, nonprecipitating species is described. The new approach confirms most conclusions of Bryant's earlier theory, removes assumptions stipulated in the latter, and is simpler to handle.

Notes: The multicomponent equilibrium theory for ion-exchange columns (chromatography) has been extended to systems accompanied by reactions in either or both phases. Based on the concept of coherence of concentration waves in the original theory, the proposed approach includes a systematic way to determine the thermodynamic variance and a general mathematical formulation to construct the composition path grid by means of numerical techniques. With proper adjustments, this approach can be applied as well to adsorption columns involving reactions. As a practical example, a comparison of predicted and observed effluent histories for an anion-exchange system with dissociation-association reactions is shown.

Notes: A model is presented in which damaged pores are distributed throughout a network of undamaged pores within a spherical particle. The differential equations are solved according to the numerical procedure of Haynes, Jr. (1975). The model is intended to simulate more highly skewed chromatographic response curves than the two-zone model recently proposed by Chou and Hegedus (1978).Pulse chromatographic measurements in fresh NaMgA zeolites using i-butane as a tracer which only enters the macropores yield response curves with relatively low skew, which are readily fitted by a system of equations accounting for diffusion in a monodisperse pore system. For hydrothermally treated zeolites effective diffusivities and Henry constants are considerably lower and the skew higher than in fresh samples.Curve fitting with the model proposed below is quite satisfactory, and the characteristic parameters determined are approximately constant at the flowrates studied. Application of the model should not be restricted to hydrothermally treated zeolites, but may be extended to catalysts or adsorbents with macroporous structures damaged by other forms of ageing.
