Notes: A class of models is derived for studying the effects of chemical kinetics on residue curve maps for reactive distillation. Activity-based rate and phase equilibrium expressions provide an accurate and thermodynamically consistent description of composition changes in nonideal, reacting vapor-liquid mixtures. For certain strategies of operation, which dictate the rate of product removal, the model equations are nonautonomous, leading to unusual dynamic behavior. However, for a certain special product removal policy, the effects of kinetics can be described by a single parameter, the Damköhler number, which measures the rate of reaction relative to product removal. For small values of the Damköhler number, the nonreactive simple distillation residue curve map is recovered and the singular points are the pure components and azeotropes in the nonreactive mixture. A bifurcation analysis shows the deformation and, in some cases, the disappearance of these singular points as the Damköhler number is increased until the equilibrium reactive residue curve map is recovered at large values. This bifurcation analysis reveals the limitations of the equilibrium analysis. A model problem for the reactive distillation of methyl tertbutyl ether from isobutene and methanol is solved.

Notes: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is used to measure the time evolution of the volume fraction vs. height profile during batch sedimentation of rod-like particle suspensions. At any instant during sedimentation, MRI clearly delineates the supernatant, suspension, and sediment regions. The rod-like particles with a mean aspect ratio of 17.4 exhibit considerably larger hindered settling effects than spherical particles with increasing particle concentrations. This can be attributed in part to the larger increase in interparticle forces and relative viscosities with suspensions of rod-like particles than with suspensions of spherical particles, as the particle concentration increases. The relative viscosity of the rod-like particle suspensions is a function of the spin-spin relaxation time, T2. Since T2 is a measurable MRI quantity, this suggests that MRI may be used as an instrument for rheological measurement.

Notes: The attainable region approach for reaction - mixing systems is combined with geometric methods for the feasibility of separations. The result is a systematic approach to identify the feasible compositions that can be achieved in processes combining simultaneous reaction, mixing, and separation. An activity-based formulation for both nonideal VLE and reaction-rate expressions is applied to develop hybrid reactor-separator models for the multiphase CSTR and PFR with simultaneous vapor removal. A reaction-separation vector is defined that satisfies the same geometric properties as the reaction vector. Therefore, the attainable region can be constructed following the existing procedure for reaction-mixing systems. This approach provides a method to generate feasible process alternatives. The technique is demonstrated on two nonideal ternary mixtures: the production of dimethyl ether by dehydration of methanol, and the production of methyl tert-butyl ether from isobutene and methanol. It is shown that for hybrid reaction-separation devices the entire composition space is not always attainable. In such cases, combining a hybrid device with traditional nonreactive separation is required to attain certain products.

Notes: A theoretical and experimental investigation of a water jet impinging on a melting solid surface has been carried out. Ice, octane, p-xylene, and olive oil served as the meltable solid materials, comprising a Prandtl number range of 5 to 2 800. An available laminar stagnation flow model was utilized to describe melting heat transfer in the jet impingement region. Melting rate measurements were found to agree quite well with the values predicted with this model.

Notes: A fifty-five gallon steel drum of a liquid organic peroxide pressurized and ruptured in the mix room of a manufacturing plant. The head of the drum blew off and the ejected material ignited. The resulting fire was extinguished by the building sprinkler system and operating personnel. Although there were no injuries, the fire caused significant damage in the mix room. The investigation of this incident, its likely cause, and the corrective actions will be discussed.

Notes: For large atmospheric vessels the potential occurrence of sufficient liquid swell resulting in two-phase flow is of special importance. Based upon an extension of analytical work it would appear justifiable to ignore two-phase flow effects for non-foamy systems.

Notes: The influence of sample thickness on fatigue crack propagation rates in injection molded nylon 66 was determined by preparing 12.7 mm thick plaques along with more conventional 3.0 mm thick samples. Initial results suggested a large effect of thickness as the crack propagation rates were accelerated in the thicker samples and the stress dependence was also increased. Since the calculated thickness for a plane stress to plane strain transition in nylon 66 is 9.0 mm, it was thought that these results were related to the stress state at the crack tip. However, a more thorough study of the thicker plaques has now demonstrated that neither the magnitude nor the stress dependence of the fatigue crack growth rates is necessarily changed under plane strain conditions as similar results can be obtained for thick and thin plaques. It is suggested that the earlier results were confounded by a previously unrecognized processing history effect which does accelerate fatigue fracture. The latter effect is shown by thermal analysis and optical microscopy to be related to a rearrangement of the polymer network during melt processing.
