Notes: Surface films grown on the intermetallic B2-FeAl alloy after wet-mechanical polishing and after a wide range of anodic polarization conditions in 1N H2SO4 have been analysed by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The results clearly indicate a remarkable enrichment of aluminium within all the films regardless of the growth conditions. Analysis of the metal-oxygen bonds has made it possible to distinguish several oxidized species. It has been found that most of the iron hydroxides are concentrated on the film surfaces, whereas aluminium hydroxides appear more homogeneously distributed over the depth of the oxide films. The thickness of the film shows an abrupt increase at 1 V, accompanied by a marked increment of Al hydroxide species.

Notes: Si—based (Si—C—N and Si—C—Al) nanopowders prepared by laser synthesis process have been studied by XPS and XAES analyses. The changes of the silicon coordination as a function of the carbon fraction in Si—C—N powders have been investigated by a detailed analysis of Si 2p and Si KLL lines and the measurements of the Auger parameter Ek(Si KLL) + Eb(Si 2p). The non-linear dependence of the Auger parameter on the carbon fraction has been interpreted as due to the formation of a carbonitride nanophase, indicating that the ternary powders are not merely a mixture of silicon carbide and silicon nitride. In Si—C—Al powders it has been found that the incorporation of aluminium results in a modified structure of the silicon carbide, as shown by the variation of the different spectral features.

Notes: The optical and electronic properties of the Cu- and Ag-TCNQ salts determined by means of conventional spectrophotometry, reflection electron energy loss spectroscopy (REELS), and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) measurements, are compared with those obtained for the copper and the silver TCNQ salts dissolved into a polyethyleneimine matrix. The optical properties of the obtained complexes differ substantially from those of the starting compounds, in particular, because of the interaction between the CuTCNQ and the polyethyleneimine, the state of oxidation of copper changes from Cu+1 to Cu+2. No meaningful changes are observed in the shape and peak position of the Ag 3d peaks of the silver-based samples.

Notes: Important properties of the coating/substrate combination like hardness, stress and, in particular, adhesion rely partly on the morphology and microstructure of the interface, which is often physically and chemically different from the substrate as well as from the coating. The aim of this work is to study the influence of the chemical state of the metal surface on the structure of the interface Al2O3/Ti6Al4V, obtained by deposition via sputtering of the ceramic. For this purpose three different surface treatments of the substrate were performed: air oxidation, cleaning by Ar+ sputtering and nitrogen ion implantation. The chemical composition of the treated surfaces was assessed by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, while the composition of the interfaces was investigated by Auger electron spectroscopy depth profiling.
