Notes: Abstract A study on the air oxidation behaviour of a commercially pure Ti6Al4V alloy between 600 and 700 °C is reported, based on determination of the kinetic curves, microhardness profiles in the metal beneath the scale, and examination of morphology and composition of the scales. The oxidation kinetics shows a gradual transformation dependent on both time and temperature from a diffusive to a nearly linear rate law. It has been observed that such transformation may be associated with the acceleration of oxide scale growth. This phenomenon is accompanied by a parallel change of the oxide morphology, which is essentially manifested with the onset of a duplex-type scale starting from 650 °C. Aluminium is found to pile up near the external surface of the oxide scales, although the presence of a continuous film of alumina may be excluded under any circumstances. Finally, the effect of aluminium and vanadium is beneficial in reducing appreciably the amount of oxygen dissolved in the surface metal layer, compared with unalloyed titanium.

Notes: The “Electrochemical Potentiokinetic Reactivation” method has been employed to quantify the degree of intergranular corrosion of Alloy 800, with different Ti + Al content, aged in the range 500-650°C for times up to 5000 hours. The results were compared with the classical Rollason's curves obtained by means of the Strauss' test and a satisfactory agreement was found. An explanation of the slight differences between both methods has been proposed on the basis of the passivity film morphology.

Description / Table of Contents: Stress corrosion cracking of Inconel 600 tubing: Influence of thermal treatment, NaOH concentration and temperatureA study has been performed concerning the role of thermal treatments on the SCC behaviour of Inconel 600 tubing in NaOH solutions in the temperature range 315-360°C. An additional investigation was undertaken to establish the effect of the NaOH concentration built-up under magnetite deposits. The changes in the microstructural variables in the four metallurgical conditions studied were indentified by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). C-ring and slow strain rate tests (10-6s-1) yielded identical results. SEM fractographs were additionally taken to reveal the cracking mode. It has been found that thermal treatment improves the SCC resistance in hot caustic solutions; particularly annealing at 650°C for 50 h appeared to impart the maximum improvement of SCC resistance.

Notes: Surface films grown on the intermetallic B2-FeAl alloy after wet-mechanical polishing and after a wide range of anodic polarization conditions in 1N H2SO4 have been analysed by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The results clearly indicate a remarkable enrichment of aluminium within all the films regardless of the growth conditions. Analysis of the metal-oxygen bonds has made it possible to distinguish several oxidized species. It has been found that most of the iron hydroxides are concentrated on the film surfaces, whereas aluminium hydroxides appear more homogeneously distributed over the depth of the oxide films. The thickness of the film shows an abrupt increase at 1 V, accompanied by a marked increment of Al hydroxide species.
