    Notes: The strong patchouli-like and woody smelling essential oil of the rhizomes of Echinops giganteus var. lelyi C. D. Adams (Compositae) contains only sesquiterpenes, which are mainly triquinanes. Besides the known tricyclic compounds, silphiperfol-5- (1, 3) and -6-ene (4), modhephen-2-ene (5), α- (6) and β-isocomene (7), silphiperfolan-7β-ol (12), presilphiperfolan-8-ol (13), silphiperfol-6-en-5-one (14) and 7-epi-silphiperfolan-6β-ol (20), the following compounds, three of which (15, 17, 18) have new skeletons, were found, for the first time, occurring naturally: presilphiperfol-7-ene (2), cameroonan-7-ol (15), an 11(7→8)-abeo-presilphiperfolan-7-ol, prenopsan-8-ol (17), a 1(8→7)-abeo-cameroonan-8-ol, and nopsan-4-ol (18), a 3(4→8)-abeo-prenopsan-4-ol, three diastereomers of silphiperfolan-6-ol (19, 21, 22), modheph-2-en-8-ol (23) and silphiperfola-4,7(14)-diene (24). All structures were elucidated by NMR spectroscopy. A biogenetic pathway from a presilphiperfolane cation C to the cameroonane K, prenopsane L and nopsane M cations is shown. Cameroonanol (15) and prenopsanol (17) are the main contributors to the fragrance of the total oil.

On Constituents of the Eupatorium GroupThe investigation of six Mexican species of the old genus Eupatorium which are now placed in the genera Ageratina, Critonia and Fleischmannia, yields two new sesquiterpenic acids (12 and 16), a cadinane derivative (40) and three sesquiterpene lactones (41, 57 and 58). In addition besides already known compounds eleven new thymol derivatives (3-10 and 46-48), four p-hydroxy-acetophenone derivatives (21, 26, 30 and 45), three benzyl benzoates (35-37), a flavanone (54) and a lignan (60) are isolated. The structures are established by spectroscopic data as well as by some chemical reactions. The chemotaxonomical aspects are discussed.
    Notes: Die Untersuchung von sechs mexikanischen Arten der alten Gattung Eupatorium, die jetzt in die Gattungen Ageratina, Critonia und Fleischmannia eingeordnet werden, ergibt zwei neue Sesquiterpensäuren (12 und 16), ein Cadinan-Derivat (40) und drei Sesquiterpenlactone (41, 57 und 58). Außerdem werden neben bereits bekannten Verbindungen elf neue Thymolderivate (3-10 und 46-48), vier p-Hydroxyacetophenon-Derivate (21, 26, 30 und 45), drei Benzoesäurebenzylester (35-37), ein Flavanon (54) und ein Lignan (60) isoliert. Die Konstitutionen werden durch spektroskopische Daten sowie durch einige chemische Reaktionen geklärt. Die chemotaxonomischen Aspekte werden diskutiert.

    Description / Table of Contents: Steiractinolides, a New Group of Sequiterpene LactonesFrom Steiractinia mollis and Aspilia pluriseta in addition to known compounds several sesquiterpene lactones were isolated, the 1H NMR spectral data of which characteristically differ from those of corresponding eudesmanolides. Careful 1H NMR investigations and preparation of several model compounds finally allowed the elucidation of the structures of these lactones which could be established by X-ray analysis of a tetrahydro derivative of one of the lactones. Accordingly, the configurations of some lactones isolated from a Wedelia species have to be corrected. The biogenesis of these 10α-methyleudesmanolides is discussed. The Steiractinia species further afforded a new ent-kaurenic acid derivative. Furthermore, a partial synthesis of telekin is described.
    Notes: Aus Steiractinia mollis und Aspilia pluriseta wurden zusätzlich zu bekannten Verbindungen mehrere Sesquiterpenlactone isoliert, deren 1H-NMR-spektroskopische Daten sich charakteristisch von denen entsprechender Eudesmanolide unterscheiden. Sorgfältige 1H-NMR-Untersuchungen und die Darstellung von Modellverbindungen erlaubten schließlich eine Klärung der Strukturen, die durch Röntgen-Strukturanalyse eines Tetrahydroderivates eines der Lactone gesichert wurden. Entsprechend müssen die Konfigurationen einiger aus einer Wedelia-Art isolierten Lactone korrigiert werden. Die Biogenese dieser 10α-Methyleudesmanolide wird diskutiert. Die Steiractinia-Art lieferte außerdem ein neues ent-Kaurensäure-Derivat. Weiterhin wird eine Partialsynthese von Telekin beschrieben.

    Description / Table of Contents: Clerodane Derivatives and Novel Diterpenes From Conyza scabrida DCThe careful separation of the extract of the aerial parts of Conyza scabrida afforded in addition to known compounds 12 new clerodane derivatives and 9 diterpenes with unusal carbon skeletons which most likely were formed in part by electrocyclic transformations of the clerodanes. The structures were elucidated by NMR studies. The chemotaxonomic situation is discussed briefly.
    Notes: Die sorgfältige Trennung des Extraktes der oberirdischen Teile von Conyza scabrida ergibt neben bereits bekannten Verbindungen 12 neue Clerodan-Derivate und 9 Diterpene mit ungewöhnlichen Kohlenstoffgerüsten, die wahrscheinlich teilweise durch elektrocyclische Umwandlungen der Clerodane gebildet werden. Die Strukturen werden durch NMR-Untersuchungen geklärt. Die chemotaxonomische Situation wird kurz diskutiert.

Die Strukturen werden durch spektroskopische Methoden und einige chemische Umwandlungen geklärt.

    Description / Table of Contents: Steiractinolides from Aspilia and Wedelia SpeciesThe reinvestigation of the polar fractions of Aspilia parvifolia afforded eight further steiractinolides and one geranylgeraniol derivative. The aerial parts of a new Wedelia species gave three derivatives of 4,5-dihydrosteiractinolides. The structures were elucidated by detailed 1H NMR studies. The configurations of some eudesmanolides from Wedelia trilobata were corrected and the absolute configuration of the steiractinolides has been determined by using the Horeau method.
    Notes: Die erneute Untersuchung der polaren Fraktionen von Aspilia parvifolia ergibt acht weitere Steiractinolide und ein Geranylgeraniol-Derivat. Die oberirdischen Teile einer neuen Wedelia-Art liefern drei Derivate von 4,5-Dihydrosteiractinolid. Die Strukturen werden durch eingehende 1H-NMR-Untersuchungen geklärt. Die Konfigurationen einiger Eudesmanolide aus Wedelia trilobata werden korrigiert, und die absolute Konfiguration der Steiractinolide wird mit Hilfe der Horeau-Methode bestimmt.

    Description / Table of Contents: Decathieleanolide, a Dimeric Guaianolide from Decachaeta thieleanaIn addition to the main constituent, the guaianolide thieleanin (1), the aerial parts of Decachaeta thieleana afforded the four further guaianolides 2-5 and an unusual dimeric sesquiterpene lactone named decathieleanolide (10). The structures were elucidated by spectroscopic methods. The assignment of the signals of the very complex 1H NMR spectrum of 10 was possible by using double resonance experiments and 2D-J spectroscopy. The biogenesis is discussed briefly.
    Notes: Neben dem Hauptinhaltsstoff, dem Guajanolid Thieleanin (1), ergeben die oberirdischen Teile von Decachaeta theileana die vier weiteren Guajanolide 2-5 und ein ungewöhnliches dimeres Sesquiterpenlacton, das Decathieleanolid (10) genannt wird. Die Strukturen werden durch spektroskopische Methoden geklärt. Die Zuordnung der Signale des sehr komplexen 1H-NMR-Spektrums von 10 wird durch Doppelresonanzexperimente und 2D-J-Spektroskopie ermöglicht. Die Biogenese wird kurz diskutiert.
