The Photoelectron Spectrum of 1,2-Diethylspiro[2.4]hepta-1,4,6-triene. An Example for a π-σ* InteractionThe photoelectron (PE) Spectrum of 1, 2-diethylspiro[2.4]hepta-1,4,6-triene (1b) is discussed. The assignment of the first four bands in the PE spectrum of 1b is met by a comparison with the PE spectra of 1,2-diethylspiro[2.4]hepta-4,6-diene (2b) and tetramethylcyclopropene (3) as well as semiempirical calculations. The result that the first ionization potential of 1b is smaller than that of 2b is attributed to a dominance of a π(b2)-σ* interaction. This interaction overrides the spiroconjugation.
Notes:
