    Notes: Abstract  Regions of the genome influencing frost tolerance in an outbred family of Eucalyptus nitens have been identified. Two QTLs present on the same linkage group, but located 40 cM apart, were identified using single-factor analysis of variance. The QTLs explained between 7.7 and 10.8% of the phenotypic variation for frost tolerance in this family. Analysis of marker loci linked to the QTLs showed one of them to have a simple mode of action with the effect segregating from the male parent in the family. For the other QTL multiple alleles were identified. This QTL showed segregation from the female parent which gave a positive effect on frost tolerance; however, an allele segregating from the male parent was identified which showed a negative interaction with the allele for increased frost tolerance.

    Notes: Abstract  Regions of the genome influencing height and leaf area in seedlings of a three-generation outbred pedigree of Eucalyptus nitens have been identified. Three QTLs affecting height and two QTLs affecting leaf area were located using single-factor analysis of variance. The three QTLs affecting height each explained between 10.3 and 14.7% of the phenotypic variance, while the two QTLs for leaf area each explained between 9.8 and 11.6% of the phenotypic variation. Analysis of fully informative marker loci linked to the QTLs enabled the mode of action of the QTLs to be investigated. For three loci the QTL effect segregated from only one parent, while for two loci the QTL showed multiple alleles and the effect segregated from both parents in the pedigree. The two QTLs affecting leaf area were located in the same regions as two of the QTLs affecting height. Analysis of these regions with fully informative markers showed that both QTLs were linked to the same markers, but one had a similar size of effects and a similar mode of action for both height and leaf area, whilst the other showed a different mode of action for the two traits. These regions may contain two closely linked genes or may involve a single gene with a pleiotrophic effect on both height and leaf area. The QTL with the greatest effect showed multiple alleles and an intra-locus interaction that reduced the size of the effect. Assessment for two of the QTLs in a second related family did not show an effect associated with the marker loci; however, this was consistent with the mode of action of these QTLs and the pattern of inheritance in the second family.

    Notes: HÜCKEL and SCF molecular orbitals habe been evaluated for radialene, the parent hydrocarbon of hexamethyl-radialene (hexaethylidene-cyclohexane). The energies of the excited singlet states of this molecule have been calculated by the PARISER-PARR method and also by considering the molecule to be made up of six weakly coupled ethylene fragments. The results are compared with the observed spectrum of hexamethyl-radialene. Both theoretical treatments show that the first absorption band at 38500 cm-l has symmetry B1u (in D6u or A2u (in D3d) which corresponds to a forbidden transition for the planar structure, but is allowed in the puckered D3d configuration. The more intense band at 48800 cm-l is probably E1u (in D6h) or Eu (in D3d) and is allowed in both the planar and the puckered configurations.

    Notes: Large-scale fire experiments have been carried out in a special test rig to study the chemical nature of fire atmosphere using a ‘fingerprint’ sampling and analysis method. Four polymeric materials - wood, polypropylene, polymethyl methacrylate and polystyrene foam - were used separately as fuel, with both high and low ventilation. In addition to oxides of carbon the fingerprints yielded typically between twenty and forty different chemical compounds including several (e.g. aldehydes) which could contribute significantly to the irritancy of the fire gases. The change in nature of the fingerprint gases with the different ventilation conditions, different polymeric materials and with different stages of the same fire is discussed, together with the toxicological significance of the results.

    Notes: The hydrogen-atom recombination reaction has been simulated using a molecular dynamics technique recently formulated by the authors [1]. The rate of recombination has been calculated over a range of temperatures and inert gas concentrations (He and Ar) and agrees well with available experimental data. The calculations reproduce the negative activation energy characteristic of an atom recombination process. Over the range of conditions studied recombination was found to proceed via the energy transfer mechanism only, no evidence of bound HAr or HHe species was observed. Recombination was found to occur through an intermediate metastable diatomic molecule which is in equilibrium with its environment and from which there is a bottleneck to the formation of a stable molecule. The initial formation of a metastable species is sensitive to the hydrogen-inert gas potential, but relaxation of the total energy is primary determined by the mass of the third-body and the collision frequency.

    Notes: Full-scale fire tests on domestic beds fully equipped with bedding materials have been carried out in an experimental compartment-corridor facility at the Fire Research Station, Borehamwood, U. K. Mattresses made of hair, spring interior, foam rubber and polyurethane of various types, together with mattress covers of cotton, flame-retarded cotton or proofed nylon were studied. The effectiveness of protective hair or glass fibre interlining was examined. The study has shown that a rapid development of fire in bed and bedding materials can take place with certain combinations of mattresses and their covers. The types of covers extremely important in overall fire development, particularly with polyurethane mattresses. A substantial improvement in the fire behaviour of many of the principal types of beds tested can be achieved by a careful selection of bedding materials, such as the type of mattress cover, and in certain cases by the use of protective interlinings.
