Notes: Abstract. A hydrodynamic thrombectomy catheter was prospectively evaluated for the treatment of recently thrombosed vessels. A total of 52 consecutive patients (42 males and 10 females; mean age 64 ± 15 years) presenting with acute or subacute occlusion of dialysis shunts (n = 25), peripheral bypass (n = 14) or native arteries (n = 15) were treated with the Hydrolyser (Cordis Europa NV, Roden, The Netherlands). Mean occlusion time was 4 days (range 1–17 days) and mean thrombus length 19 ± 11 cm. The Hydrolyser was effective and fast in removing thrombus, regardless of the thrombus length. No major complications were reported. The immediate procedure success rates were 82, 100, 87 and 79 % for Brescia Cimino, dialysis shunt, native arteries and bypass grafts, respectively. Adjunctive thrombolysis (applied for persistence of residual thrombus or thrombosed distal vessels too small for hydrolytic thrombectomy) was required in 4 % of thrombotic dialysis shunts, in 20 % of native arteries and in 50 % of bypass graft occlusions. On angiographic controls, distal embolizations were reported only in native arteries (13 %) and bypasses (14 %); all were successfully treated percutaneously, except for one case treated by Fogarty balloon. Cumulative primary patency rates were respectively at 6 months 56, 62, 78 and 65 % for each indication. We conclude from this preliminary clinical study that hydrodynamic thrombectomy with a Hydrolyser is a promising technique to treat acute occlusions. This device can reduce complications as well as the time required to remove large amounts of thrombus and the use of expensive thrombolytic drugs.

Notes: Five different glucomannan samples were recrystallized from dilute solution. Depending on the experimental conditions, the crystals obtained could be identified as corresponding to the mannan I (anhydrous precipitate of more or less regular lozenge-shaped crystals) or mannan II (hydrated gel-forming pseudo-fibrillar precipitate). High-molecular-weight material, low temperature of crystallization, or a polar crystallization medium favored the mannan II polymorph, whereas a low-molecular weight, a high temperature of crystallization, and a crystallization medium of low polarity yielded the mannan I polymorph. Since the base-plane unit-cell dimensions are fairly constant with respect to variation of glucose, it is likely that isomorphous replacement of mannose by glucose occurs in glucomannan crystallization; the data also indicate that perfection of the glucomannan crystals was reduced in specimens having a high glucose:mannose ratio. The oriented crystallization of glucomannan on cellulose microfibrils was also studied under conditions where the mannan I polymorph was obtained. This gave shish-kebab structures that were characterized.

Notes: A user-friendly program has been developed to estimate copolymerization reactivity ratios based on a nonlinear minimization algorithm. The use of an optimal experimental design for copolymerization when the Mayo-Lewis model applies is presented. The applicability of the program is demonstrated using actual and simulated experimental data.

Notes: The enzymatic degradation of β(1 → 4) xylan single crystals with xylanases was investigated by electron microscopy and electron diffraction. The enzyme attack takes place at the edge of the crystals and progresses towards their centers. This is consistent with an endo-enzyme mechanism, where the enzyme interacts essentially with the accessible xylan chains located at the crystal periphery.

Notes: An experimental investigation of the kinetics of the bulk free radical polymerization of butyl acrylate initiated with 2,2′-azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN) was conducted at 50° and 60°C using two initiator concentrations. Conversion levels were measured by gravimetry and were independently confirmed using replicate runs. The experiments, conducted in glass ampoules, were performed over the full conversion range. A mathematical model for process simulation purposes was developed. The model was able to predict conversion at the two temperatures and initiator concentrations, thus providing a better understanding of the butyl acrylate homopolymerization kinetics.

Notes: Coventional pultrusion of thermoset composites is under increasing examination for emissions of harmful volatiles from the resin wetout tank. Even though the pultrusion of thermoplastic matrix composites produces no emissions, it is difficult to wet individual fibers due to their high melt viscosities. This paper addresses both the issues of volatiles and wetting with a process called Reaction Injection Pultrusion (RIP). A prototype RIP machine was used to make both thermoplastic polyurethane and thermoset polyisocyanurate matrix composites. The RIP process produces pultruded parts with low void content, good surface finish, and acceptable mechanical properties. The low viscosity constituents used in RIP help improve fiber impregnation, while the small volume of the impregnation bath reduces emissions. Processing parameters such as line speeds, catalyst levels, and die temperaures were varied to establish processing guidelines for sustained production.
