    Notes: An experimental study of the relationships between foaming variables and foamed structures of expanded ethylene-propylene terpolymer (EPDM) is reported. The study was carried out using EPDM composition containing azobisformamide blowing agent. The compositions were expanded and cured in hot air into a foamed structure consisting of dense skin and foamed core. The results showed that the foam density, skin thickness, average cell size, and number of cells of the expanded rubbers can be controlled closely by the foaming variables such as residence time, foaming temperature, and blowing agent concentration.

    Notes: The dynamic viscoelastic properties and thermal transition behavior of reaction injection molding (RIM) and cast polyurethane - isocyanurate elastomers have been studied as a function of various segments (soft and hard urethane, and hard isocyanurate) content. RIM and cast elastomers were prepared at different concentrations of soft and hard urethane, and hard isocyanurate segments. RIM elastomers with the higher isocyanate index (lower hard urethane and greater isocyanurate segment content) displayed an unchanged Tg (glass transition temperature of soft segment) and increasing Tgh (glass transition temperature of hard segment) related to the hard urethane and isocyanurate segments. This is due to the phase separation between the soft and the hard segments. Cast elastomers synthesized from the higher amount of 1,4-butanediol (greater hard urethane and less hard isocyanurate segment content) showed an increasing Tgs, decreasing Tgh of hard urethane segments, and an unchanged Tgh of isocyanurate segments. This is related to the phase mixing between the soft and the hard urethane segments and the phase separation of hard isocyanurate and hard urethane segments.

    Notes: Interpenetrating polymer networks (IPNs) composed of polyurethanes and epoxies were prepared by the simultaneous technique. Modifications of the polymer structures resulted in a series of IPNs exhibiting semimiscible behavior, as evidenced by broad glass transitions in the dynamic mechanical spectra. Since this indicates materials with potentially good sound attenuation properties as a function of temperature and frequency, foams were prepared from these IPN systems. Enhanced sound absorption occurred in these foams when measured using the impedance tube method.

    Notes: The geometry dependence of the exchange integrals and the total energies of sulfur-bridged complexes of the types L5NiSNiL5, L4NiS2NiL4, and L3NiS3NiL3 is studied by quantum chemical ab initio methods. The linear monobridged complex is antiferromagnetic, the bi- and triply-bridged complexes are ferromagnetic for NiSNi angles between 85° and 100° and antiferromagnetic for smaller and larger angles.     Notes: An electron spin resonance (ESR) technique is employed to determine the free radical distribution in the articulating surfaces of retrieved acetabular cups and knee-joint plateaus (retrieved after more than 6 years of implantation). Similar measurements made on samples prepared from cyclically stressed and unstressed cups, and on samples following oxidations in nitric acid and intralipid solutions provided sufficient data to gain more knowledge about the combined chemical and mechanical effects on PE free radicals during implantation. In UHMWPE free radicals are primarily initiated by gamma-ray sterilization; however, during implantation, peroxy (scission type) free radicals are formed and reach a maximum concentration level (equilibrium state) due to oxidation by chemical (hemoglobin and/or synovial fluids) environment of the joints. Subsequently, due to frictional heating and stress in the loading zones, free radical reaction is accelerated and their number is reduced only in those areas. This is consistent with the observations of a temperature rise in acetabular cups during in vitro frictional wear stress tests and in vivo telemetry observations, as reported by others. Compared with the previously reported SEM micrographs the low-free-radical regions are correlated with high-wear areas and the high-free-radical regions with the low-wear areas.

    Notes: A constant supply of blood-borne glucose is vital to cerebral metabolism. Although transport of glucose into the nervous tissue, effectively separated from the blood by a functional barrier (the blood-brain barrier, BBB), is one of the essential properties of the cerebral endothelium, little is known about its metabolic regulation and developmental expression in the BBB. In this study we provide evidence by immunocytochemistry that the pattern of the brain endothelial glucose transporter in rat brains (BBB-GT), immunologically homologous with the human hepatoma (G2), human erythrocyte transporter (Glut 1), changes with BBB maturation. While the neuroepithelium at embryonic days 12 and 13 shows a high incidence of immuno-detectable BBB-GT, vascularisation of the cerebral anlage and subsequent development of vascular tightness, as evidenced by intravascularly applied horseradish peroxidase and fluorescinated dextrans, is accompanied by a significant reduction BBB-GT expression in neuroepithelial cells and confinement of BBB-GT expression to the cerebral endothelium. Immunoblots and Northern blots of embryonic brain homogenates corroborate this change in BBB-GT expression in the brain anlage at the time of BBB maturation. However, low molecular weight glucose transporters, presumed to be of non-endothelial origin, are less dramatically reduced. The development of BBB tightness, therefore, seems to play a pivotal role in the pattern of BBB-GT expression during brain differentiation.

    Notes: Temperature dependent Brillouin scattering studies of PVF2 films stretched to various stretch ratios have been carried out. Elastic constants for unstretched and stretched films have been obtained as functions of temperature. The elastic constant C33 of the stretched films has a greater temperature dependence than that of unstretched films. To elucidate the effect of the surrounding amorphous matrix on the Brillouin spectrum of semicrystalline PVF2 film, we carried out Brillouin scattering studies of films made from blends of PVF2 and PMMA.

    Notes: Diffusion coefficients of camphorquinone (CQ) and its photoproduct (CQP) in two poly(methyl metbacrylate) (PMMA) samples with different molecular weights are measured as a function of temperature. Above the glass transition, the temperature dependence is not Arrhenius and can be described by the Williams-Landel-Ferry equation. It is also shown that the difference in the temperature dependence of the diffusion coefficients of CQ in the two PMMA samples is attributable to the difference in glass transition temperatures.

    Notes: The effect of physical aging on the tracer diffusion coefficient D of camphorquinone in polysulfone is investigated. It is shown that if the sample is sufficiently annealed and physical aging is nearly complete, the temperature dependence of D will reflect the primary α-relaxation process of the host polymer. In the temperature range between Tg (=185°C) and 165°C, D is found to be a function of time, and the time dependence of D is given by D = At-μ, with μ approximately equal to unity. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
