Notes: Summary GC-MS analysis of hydrocarbons, thermally mobilized from rock and coal samples (“thermodesorption”) at 320°C, provides valuable and readily available information of organic geochemical significance. Two oil shale and three coal samples of different rank have been selected for this study. The molecular patterns of compound classes of various saturated and aromatic hydrocarbons are recorded here by employing mass chromatography of selected ions. The method described is of particular importance for the detection of those volatile constituents in coals and sedimentary rocks, which are usually not recovered during elaborate workup procedures (i.e. solvent extraction, liquid chromatography) due to evaporation losses.

Notes: Chloro-nitrosyl Molybdenum Complexes as Epoxidation Catalysts. II. Catalysts Inactive in Epoxide Ring-opening ReactionChloro-nitrosyl molybdenum complexes which are active in the epoxidation reaction do not catalyze the consecutive epoxide ring-opening reaction if the coordinated ligand can form a strong transition metal-ligand bond. The temperature of the cleavage of the ligand from the central atom obtained by derivatographic measurements characterizes the strength of this bond. The epoxide ring-opening activity can be demonstrated by the initial reaction rate, by the conversion of the initial epoxide and by the yield of the ring-opening products 1 and 2 obtained in the reaction of 1, 2-epoxyoctane with ethanol in chlorobenzene at 100°C. High temperatures of ligand cleavage correspond with low conversions of the initial epoxide, low initial reaction rate and a low ratio of the isomers 2/1.

Notes: Summary The quantitative analysis of hydrocarbons (C1 to C15 molecular range) from the water saturated pore structure of sedimentary rocks is performed by a combined thermal mobilization/glass capillary GC system. Organic geochemical processes, such as the generation of hydrocarbons as a function of kerogen type and maturity of sedimentary organic matter are studied.

Description / Table of Contents: Test Techniques for High Temperature Structural MaterialsThe progress in the development of high-temperature resistant materials for practical application at temperatures between 1000°C and 2000°C requires also further development of high-temperature testing and measuring techniques for the evaluation of the necessary material data. Selected characteristic testing problems in the evaluation of mechanical properties at temperatures above 1000°C are dealt with, and technical solutions and exemplary results are presented.
Notes: Die Entwicklung bzw.

Notes: The methylphenanthrene index (MPI) [1,2] which was recognized as suitable for the assessment of the “thermal” history of sedimentary organic matter, can be determined directly i.e. without preceding LC group separations by application of multi-dimensional GC in capillary columns. A GC double oven instrument (Siemens Sichromat 2) equipped with a “live switching” coupling piece was used for the necessary measurements.

Notes: The Transition Metal Catalyzed Nucleophilic Epoxide Ring Opening ReactionThe catalytic influence of MoO2(acac)2Acac-Acetylacetonat , Mo(CO) 6 , MoCl 5 , WCl 6 and TaCl 5 on the reaction of 1,2-epoxy-octane with ethanol at 100°C in dioxan or chlorobenzene as solvents is proved. Water and hydroperoxides react with a higher rate than alcohols. When changing from primary to secondary and tertiary alcohols a decrease of the reaction rate is observed. 2,3- and 3,4-Epoxyheptane and cis- and trans-4,5-epoxy-octane react more slowly than the corresponding 1,2-epoxides. Epichlorhydrin and methylglycidether react with a lower, cyclohexene oxide, styrene oxide and norbornene oxide react with a higher rate than 1,2-epoxyoctane. The reactivities of the two dicyclopentadiene monoepoxides correspond with the reactivities of the norbornene and cyclopentene oxides. In the molybdenum catalyzed epoxide ring opening reaction an isomer distribution appears in favour of the 1-hydroxy-2-ethoxy-alkane 2 . A mechanism in the coordination sphere of the transition metal complex is proposed.
