Description / Table of Contents: Summary Annular erythema of infancy is a rare and little-known entity. Since its initial description by Peterson and Jarratt in 1981 only 4 further cases have been reported. We present the first case in the German literature. A 4-year-old boy developed non-itching erythematous papules on the trunk which evolved into annular and gyrate erythemas within weeks. The condition showed a relapsing course with disease-free intervals of several months duration. There were no general complaints. Laboratory investigations including detailed serological tests for infectious diseases were normal. Histopathology showed a striking eosinophilic inflammatory infiltrate predominantly in perivascular areas, without peripheral blood eosinophilia. The clinical differential diagnosis of annular erythema of infancy includes erythema annulare centrifugum, while microscopically one must exclude eosinophilic cellulitis (Wells’ syndrome). The etiology is unknown and there is no effective therapy. In our case, as well as in all previously published cases, the disease resolved spontaneously. Therefore, it may be considered benign and self-limited.

Notes: We study picosecond carrier transport dynamics induced by 200 fs 1.55 μm optical pulses in charge injection transistor structures. We propose and demonstrate a new optoelectronic method for exploring the interactions of hot majority carriers and cold minority carriers, as well as the optical control of real space transfer in these devices. The minority holes photogenerated in the channel produce substantial cooling of the hot-electron majority carriers and lead to the reduction of the real space transfer. The new method also provides a direct measure of the minority carrier lifetime in the transistor channel. These effects are demonstrated in InGaAs-channel devices with both InAlAs and InP barriers. The similarities in the device characteristics are explained in terms of the interaction of photogenerated minority holes with majority electrons in the channel leading to a photoconductor-like drain current and to a reduction in the real space transfer collector current. The differences are attributed to the different conduction and valence band energy offsets between the wide band gap barrier and the low band gap collector and channel layers. Furthermore, the InAlAs-barrier device shows a capability of serving as a practical photodetector with the measured, system-limited recovery speed of ∼5 ps. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Pump/probe self-heterodyne experiments on the amide I band of a small de novo cyclic pentapeptide were utilized to demonstrate a novel form of two-dimensional (2D) vibrational spectroscopy. Spectrally resolved cross peaks are observed, which measure the coupling between different peptide units and which can be related to the structure of the peptide, in analogy to 2D-NMR spectroscopy. In contrast to our previous work, these experiments work in the time domain in the semiimpulsive limit, employing two intense ultrashort infrared laser pulses. A theoretical formalism is presented in order to model the interstate coherent wave packet generated by the excitation pulse and the resulting spectroscopic signal. The observed coherences provide an independent proof of excitonic coupling within the amide I manifold of the peptide backbone. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The vibrational relaxation time of the cyanide ion in H2O and in D2O was measured by IR-pump–IR-probe experiments. The isotopic composition of the ion was varied in order vary the oscillation frequency of the CN− vibrational mode. In D2O, the vibrational relaxation rate is accelerated from 120 to 71 ps when increasing the vibrational frequency from 2004 cm−1 (13C15N) to 2079 cm−1 (12C14N−). In H2O, time constants between 31 and 28 ps were observed. The systematic dependence of the relaxation rates on the vibrational frequency provides a small portion of the friction spectrum. A significant correlation between vibrational relaxation time of the solute and the IR absorption cross section of the solvent was found, providing experimental evidences for a dominating contribution to vibrational relaxation of Coulomb interactions and the importance of coupling to internal solvent modes. In addition, the infrared bandwidths and the orientational diffusion times are reported. All experimental observables T1, T2, and τ2R related to the vibrational transitions of CN− are now experimentally available and can be compared with model theoretical calculations. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The vibrational cooling of azobenzene after photoisomerization is investigated by time resolved IR spectroscopy with femtosecond time resolution. Transient difference spectra were obtained in a frequency range where phenyl ring modes and the central N(Double Bond)N-stretching mode absorbs. The experimental data are discussed in terms of a simple theoretical model which was derived in order to account for the off-diagonal anharmonicity between the investigated high-frequency modes and the bath of the remaining low-frequency modes in a polyatomic molecule. It is shown that these off-diagonal anharmonic constants dominate the observed transient absorbance changes while the anharmonicity of the high-frequency modes themselves (diagonal anharmonicity) causes only minor effects. Based on the transient IR spectra, the energy flow in the azobenzene molecule can be described as follows: After an initial ultrafast intramolecular energy redistribution process, the decay of the related intramolecular temperature occurs via intermolecular energy transfer to the solvent on a time scale of ca. 20 ps. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: In a cross-over trial two different new syndet bars differing in their content of sodium cocoyl isethionate, disodium lauryl sulfosuccinate and wheat starch as major components were compared in the cleansing of hand skin of 72 healthy volunteers. The preparation designated ‘T’containing a higher amount of wheat starch turned out to be less irritant as judged from the parameters itching and erythema (p 〈 0.05, Wilcoxon's test for matched pairs). The present trial design looks appropriate to differentiate the irritancy potential of two chemically similar syndet bar preparations.

Notes: Two long-term trials were conducted each over eight weeks to compare the effect of the regular application of skin cleansing preparations of pH 5.5 and pH 8.5 and pH 5.5 and pH 7.0 respectively on the surface pH, roughness and transepidermal water loss (TEWL) of normal human forehead and forearm skin. Both trials were based on a cross-over design: five healthy volunteers started with a pH 5.5 preparation and switched to the other after four weeks, five additional volunteers used the preparations in the opposite order. While the skin surface pH was markedly lower in those individuals using the pH 5.5 preparation at each examination, as compared to those using the pH 8.5 or pH 7.0 preparation, no such difference could be established with respect to skin roughness and TEWL. Hence the skin irritancy of a cleansing preparation does not seem to be linked to its pH within the pH ranges tested.

Notes: In two studies, we investigated the influence of aversive and nonaversive reinforcers on startle reactivity, visceral responses, and self-report during Pavlovian conditioning. Furthermore, we assessed how awareness of the stimulus contingencies affect conditioned discrimination in the different response systems. Conditioned potentiation of the startle response was only observed in the context of aversive learning. Moreover, blink potentiation occurred without awareness of the relationship between the conditioned and unconditioned stimulus. In contrast, skin conductance conditioning was independent of the aversiveness of the reinforcer and was only obtained for those individuals who could correctly verbalize the stimulus contingency in a postconditioning recognition test. Cardiac responses varied with the task demands of the situation and covaried with individual response stereotypes.

Notes: The temporal course of startle reflex modulation and autonomic response patterns to fear-relevant and fear-irrelevant pictures in subjects with high and low levels of animal fear was investigated. Thirty-eight high-fear and 48 low-fear volunteers viewed photos of snakes and spiders and pictures of neutral and pleasant content. The slides were presented for 6 s or for only 150 ms, depending on the group. Acoustic startle probes were presented at five different times after slide onset. Relative potentiation of the startle responses started 300 ms after onset of snake/spider pictures in fearful subjects. This fear-potentiated startle effect was maintained for the later probe times and was identical in the 150-ms condition. Fear-relevant pictures also prompted a sympathetically dominated autonomic response profile in fearful persons. These data support the idea that fear can be activated very rapidly, requiring only minimal stimulus input.
