    Notes: The porin from Paracoccus denitrificans ATCC 13543 was purified and crystallized. Two crystal forms were obtained from porin solutions with β-d-octylglucopyra-noside as detergent. Crystals of form I belong to the monoclinic spacegroup C2 with unit cell dimensions a = 112.2 Å, b = 193.8 Å, c = 100.5 Å and β = 129.2°. There is 1 trimer per asymmetric unit. Crystals of form II are triclinic with α = 89.7 Å, b = 98.8 Å, c = 112.5 Å, b = 112.5Å, β = 101.8°, γ = 106.7° (2 trimers per asymmetric unit). Both crystal forms diffract to 3 Å. © 1995 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

    Notes: Metathesis ring opening polymerization has been used to copolymerize norbornene and 7,8-bis(trifluoromethyl)tricyclo[4,2,2,02,5]deca-3,7,9-triene. Subsequent thermal elimination of the precursor copolymers yielded acetylene-norbornene copolymers. The undoped copolymers were found to have electrical conductivity, spin concentration, and EPR linewidths which vary with composition. The location of the trans-C—H out-of-plane vibration, however, was invariant at 1010cm-1 indicating that conjugation length of n 〉 4 are present even at 40% acetylene content in the copolymer. The copolymers containing 79 mol % of acetylene units attained a doped conductivity of 0.02 S/cm with a dopant concentration of 6 mol % of I3- per sp2 carbon.

    Notes: Embryonic development in metazoa, to a significant extent, is directed by genes which contain a conserved sequence motif named the homeobox. This sequence encodes a polypeptide called the homeodomain which has sequence specific DNA-binding activity. We report the purification, crystallization, and preliminary diffraction analysis of the Drosophila Even-skipped homeodomain (Eve HD) bound to two different oligonucleotides. Crystals of Eve HD complexed with an AT-rich sequence belong to space group P21, a = 34.06, b = 61.61, c = 39.99 Å, b=90.0°. These crystals diffract to at least 2.0 Å and both native and derivative data sets have been collected. Crystals of Eve HD complexed with a GC-rich sequence belong to space group P63, a = b = 124.52, c = 66.78 Å and diffract to 3.5 Å resolution.     Description / Table of Contents: Anisotropy Effects in Copper Alloy Strip MaterialsThe textures and effects of mechanical anisotropy have been measured in several copper alloy strip materials with commercial hardness levels. In most cases mixed textures have been found with a qualitative correlation to the mechanical effects.The optimum position for spring elements proved to be transverse to rolling direction, especially the relation of the elastic limit in bonding to yield strength has a maximum in this direction.
    Notes: Bei Bändern aus verschiedenen Kupferlegierungen in handelsüblichen Festigkeitszuständen wurden die Texturen und die mechanischen Anisotropieeffekte gemessen. In den meisten Fällen wurden Mischtexturen festgestellt, welche die mechanischen Anisotropieeffekte qualitativ erklären.Für Federelemente ist die Querlage die günstigste, insbesondere ist in dieser Richtung das Verhältnis Federbiegegrenze zu Streckgrenze am höchsten.

    Notes: Investigations on the lattice constants and the calculation of domain sizes and mean squared lattice strains have been presented for PVD-TiN coatings of various thickness on the substrates 52 100 and M2. Constant dependencies have been observed for the lattice constants, domain sizes and lattice strains as a function of the coating thickness. The two different substrate materials have no influence on the mentioned properties.

    Notes: Distinction between the linkage types 1 → 2, 1 → 3 and 1 → 4 of xylobioses can be achieved on the basis of the unimolecular decomposition spectra of the oxonium ions of the per-O-acetylated methyl glycosides. The spectra of the oxonium ions of various unbranched xylotri-, tetra- and pentaoses allow determination of the linkage position between the xylose residues. This indicates that in unbranched peracetylated xylo-oligosaccharides the linkage between the xylose residues at the non-reducing end can be determined.

    Notes: The positive ion fast atom bombardment (FAB) mass spectra of oligosaccharides related to D-xylan and D-glucurono-D-xylans were investigated. Although the mass spectra of the underivatized oligosaccharides are relatively weak, they still offer reliable information on the molecular weight of these compounds from their [M + H]+ and [M + H + glycerol]+ ions. Esterification, glycosidation and/or partial methylation improve the relative abundances of the molecular and fragment ions with respect to those of the glycerol matrix. The mass spectra of these derivatized compounds also allow the determination of the mass of the monosaccharide units by the occurrence of more abundant and characteristic fragment ions. The differently linked D-xylobioses of the (1 → 2), (1 → 3) and (1 → 4) type cannot be distinguished on the basis of their mass spectra alone. The collisional activation (CA) spectra of the [M + H + glycerol]+ adduct ions, however, revealed that an unequivocal determination of the type of linkage in these isomers is possible. The small values of the discrepancy factors in the FAB CA spectra prove that CA mass spectrometry is, also in combination with FAB ionization, the most precise of the current mass spectrometric techniques.
