Notes: Different polyurea-amides were synthesized by interfacial polymerization of acid chloride, diamine, and diisocyanate. The polymers and the membranes were characterized for their RO/UF applications. Highly porous membranes could be prepared from the sulfuric acid-based casting formulation and the membrane casting conditions were established. The resulting membranes are not asymmetric as they give high permeability to water and salt solutions. They are found to be resistant to many organic solvents, thus making them useful in concentration/separation applications. Whole milk, egg albumin and Na-alginate were found to be rejected 100% by these membranes, while solutes of about 20,000 Mw are found to be rejected to the extent of 70-80%.

Notes: Synthesis of polyurea by interface polymerization of diisocyanate and diamine for preparation of polymer membrane for use in separation problems was investigated. A sulfuric-acid-based casting formulation was developed for the polymer prepared from 1,6-hexamethylene diamine and 1,6-hexamethylene diisocyanate. The resulting membrane is porous and highly permeable to water. However, salt rejection was found to be 〈20%, while high molecular weight solutes like milk, papain, and Na-alginate were found to be rejected 100%. The membrane is more like a sieve structure with the absence of an asymmetric layer. It is found to be resistant to many organic solvents, thus making it suitable for use in ultrafiltration applications.

Notes: This paper describes the swelling of cotton fiber in cadoxen containing 4.6% cadmium (w/w) and 30% ethylenediamine (w/w). A special neutral salt technique is described involving the analysis of extract as well as mother liquor which enables the determination of mechanically held liquor and hence the values of true absorption. The percentage true weight swelling values are much lower than the percentage apparent weight swelling as measured by centrifuge technique. The effect of variation in material-to-liquor ratio on the true absorption of cadmium and ethylenediamine is also investigated.

Notes: A method is described for the estimation of relative intensities of weak diagram lines from the microphotometer records of x-ray emission spectra registered on photographic films. The method is based on first correlating the experimentally determined relative intensities of two intense diagram lines with the theoretically calculated relative intensities. The experimental relative intensities of weak diagram lines are then interpolated to yield the corrected experimental relative intensities. These interpolated experimental relative intensities are found to be in good agreement with the theoretical relative intensities. The method has been applied to some recently reported weak lines in the L-emission spectra of the rare earth 57La to 63Eu.

Notes: The x-ray L3 absorption edges of all cis-1,2,3,4-cyclopentanetetracarboxylic acid complexes of Gd, Tb, Dy and Ho were recorded with the help of a 400 mm Cauchois-type bent crystal x-ray spectrograph. The behaviour of the four lanthanide cations in the environment of the same complexing ligand was investigated. The chemical shifts were correlated with IR studies. Information regarding bonding in these complexes was obtained from the observed chemical shifts. A regular decrease was observed in the average metal - ligand bond distances with increasing atomic number of the metal ion in these complexes and this is interpreted in terms of metal - oxygen interaction.

Notes: The x-ray K absorption edges of Co in some thiosemicarbazones were recorded. The results are discussed qualitatively in terms of molecular symmetry and the nature of the ligand. The extended x-ray absorption fine structure associated with the K absorption edge of cobalt in these thiosemicarbazones was also studied. The average metalligand bond lengths in these complexes were calculated.

Notes: X-ray K-absorption spectra of seven structurally important copper(II) mixed-ligand complexes were recorded using a 0.4 m radius Cauchois-type bent crystal x-ray spectrograph. The spectra of the complexes were recorded in both the solid and in aqueous solution. The observed x-ray parameters, e.g. chemical shifts, edge widths, shift of the principal absorption maximum and structure of the K-edge, were used to interpret the proposed structure of the complexes.

Notes: Thermal properties of polystyrene composites with a filler showing a solid-solid phase transition have been studied. Differential calorimeter analysis and typical insulation tests have been performed. An analysis of the experimental results has been done, by using the Stefan moving boundary theory, showing that it is inadequate to predict the thermal behavior of composites of the type studied.
