Notes: Racemic-anti-[ethylidene(1-η5-tetramethylcyclopentadienyl) (1-η5-indenyl)dimethyltitanium (6) has been synthesized and its molecular structure determined by x-ray diffraction methods. The two Ti=Me(1) and Ti=Me(2) units have bond distances differing by 0.08 Å and their proton NMR resonances are separated by over 1 ppm. Using this compound and methylaluminoxane (MAO) as the activator, at 25°C the 6/MAO catalyst produced polypropylene having crystalline domain with physical crosslinks. The polymers obtained at lower polymerization temperatures are rheologically liquids. The behaviors of this catalyst system resembles closely the previously reported rac-[anti-ethylidene(1-η5-tetramethylcyclopentadienyl) (1-η5-indenyl)dichlorotitanium (4)/MAO system. The structure of 6 determined here furnishes tangible support for the proposed two-state (isomeric)-switching propagation mechanism. Addition of MAO to 6 causes broadening of the Me(1) resonance in the 1H-NMR spectra, and 6 is decomposed by Ph3C+B(C6F5)-4. © 1992 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: The reaction of (t-BuGaCl2)2 with Ar′P(H)Li (AR′ = 2,4,6-t-Bu3C6H2) affords the chloride-bridged dimer [t-BuGa(Cl)P(H)Ar′]2 (1). The structure of 1 has been established by X-ray crystallography. Compound 1, C44H78Cl2Ga2P2, crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P21/n with Z = 2, a = 10.468(1), b = 14.967(1), c = 16.182(2) Å, and Å = 94.48(1)β. The reaction of 1 with t-BuLi is described.

Notes: A free volume probing technique, positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS) is used to characterize miscible blends of amorphous polycarbonate with a semicrystalline copolyester at room temperature. The paper describes the analysis required to use the PALS technique to probe the amorphous regions in which the miscibility of the blends occurs. Analysis of the raw PALS data in this system involves taking account of the influence of crystallinity on the PALS results. The results demonstrate that the PALS technique is able to discriminate between free volume in the amorphous regions of as-molded and annealed samples. This difference in free volume between samples of differing thermal history is assigned to the influence of polymer crystals on the stress state of the miscible amorphous regions. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: The cure of a trifunctional epoxy resin with an amine coreactant was studied using two thermal analysis techniques: differential scanning claorimetry (DSC) and dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA). These techniques were used to monitor the development of both the thermal and mechanical properties with cure. Detailed kinetic analysis was performed using a variety of kinetic models: nth order, autocatalytic, and diffusion-controlled. The reaction was found to be autocatalytic in nature during the early stages of cure while becoming diffusion-controlled once vitrification had taken place. By combining the results obtained from DSC and DMTA, the degree of conversion, at which key events such as gelation and vitrification take place, were determined. A TTT diagram was constructed for this epoxy/amine system showing the final properties that can be achieved with the appropriate cure history. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: For the first time, the crystal structure of a RuII binaphthyridine complex and that of its corresponding oneelectron reduced product are reported. Reductive electrocrystallization of [Ru-(binap-2)3](PF6)2 (1, where binap-2 = 3,3′-dimethylene -2,2′ - bi [1, 8] naphthyridine) from an acetonitrile solution resulted in the formation of dark blue crystals of the one-electron reduction product, [Ru-(binap-2)3](PF6) (2) having one fewer PF-6 per formula unit. X-ray analysis reveals that the reduced complex retains the three-ligand d6 coordination around the central RuII. Based on electrostatic considerations and the positions of the PF-6 anions in the lattice, the added electron appears to be delocalized over two nearly equivalent binap-2 ligands in 2, in marked contrast to monoreduced and electrocrystallized [Na ⊂ (trisbipyridyl cryptand)]0, in which the electron is localized on only one of the bipyridyl subunits. However, based on the available data, alternative interpretations are possible. The crystal packing diagram of 2 shows several intermolecular π-π interactions, with 12 of these being shorter than 3.5 Å. In contrast, there are no intermolecular distances shorter than 3.5 Å in the crystals of 1. Two-probe electrical conductivity measurements under anaerobic conditions indicate that the crystals of 2 behave as semiconductors with a band gap of 0.53 eV, while those of the unreduced compound are insulating. This represents the first molecular semiconducting material with the potential for bidimensional behavior of its kind.

Notes: The dynamic mechanical and dielectric spectra of a miscible polyester and polycarbonate blend are investigated with emphasis on the latter technique. It was found that relaxation spectra for the blends from both techniques are broader than those of the constituent homopolymers. This is ascribed to greater intermolecular coupling and concentration fluctuations within the blends. The composition at which the greatest coupling occurs is dependent on the relaxation technique used and is skewed towards the component which shows the highest degree of intermolecular coupling. A number of parameters, such as relaxation time of the polymer molecules in the blend and relaxation strength, are compared as a function of reduced temperature (experimental temperature scaled by the glass transition temperature). Whereas blend behavior is generally intermediate between that of the homopolymers, it appears as though mobility of compositions with low polyester content have a greater relaxation time and possess a higher activation energy when compared to a simple, weighted average of the corresponding homopolymer values. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: Homopolymers and blends of polycarbonate/ThermX have been investigated by differential scanning calorimetry, dynamic mechanical analysis, density measurements, and positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy. The study focuses on the chain mobility and free volume in the amorphous miscible regions of the blends and how this mobility and free volume are affected by increasing crystallinity. It is proposed that judicious annealing, which results in increasing crystallinity (while avoiding ageing or transesterification), induces a constraint on the amorphous region leading to an increase in Tg and coalescence of free volume sites. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: Positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS), capable of probing free volume, is used to study the effect of compatibilizer concentration, compatibilizer type, and the effect of blend processing on the morphology and properties of an immiscible linear low-density polyethylene/polypropylene system. It is proposed that improvement of fracture toughness due to compatibilization can be attributed to the packing (and bonding) at interfaces. Improved interfacial packing and bonding result in lower free volume concentration than expected from component additivity, with a concomitant increase in plastic deformation on impact.

Notes: Synthesis of Bis(η5-cylopentadienyl)(1,2,3-triphenyltriphosphane-1,3-diyl)zirconium(IV) and -hafnium(IV), (M = Zr, Hf), and Structure of the Hafnocene DerivativeThe reaction of [MCp2Cl2] (M = Zr, Hf; Cp = η5-C5H5) with [LiPHPh · 2 THF] and of [ZrCp2Me2] with PH2Ph leads to (1a, M = Zr; 1b, M = Hf). The crystal structure of 1b shows that only one diastereomer is present [(R) at P(1), (S) at P(3)] and that the HfP3 metallacycle is virtually coplanar.
