Description / Table of Contents:
Notes:
Summary Taurolin gel contains the new broad-spectrum chemotherapeutic agent, taurolidine (4%), which is bound to denatured collagen and PVP. A strong bactericidal activity is seen 8–10 h after implantation. Between 1980 and 1984 this substance was used in the treatment of acute osteitis in 51 patients. A follow-up at least 6 months after operation showed: in 45 patients local and general signs of infection disappeared (32 patients, 1 operation; 13 patients, several operations). Six patients with open fractures developed a persistent fistula and required further surgical treatment. The high rate with which the osteitis is “healed”, the absence of bacterial resistance, complete resorption, and the possibility of reimplantation via drains are the advantages of Taurolin gel in the treatment of acute osteitis.
