Description / Table of Contents: The thermoplastic nickel–titanium alloy Nitinol has excellent shape memory when transferred from deep-freeze temperatures to body temperature or even 45°C, which means that staples made of this material for use in internal fixation exert a lasting compressive effect after implantation. From October 1995 to January 1998 we performed 22 compression osteosynthesis operations on scaphoid bones. The indications were: dislocated fracture in 10 cases, in 6 of them with Quervain’s luxation fracture, and pseudarthroses in 12. In 10 osteosynthesis operations we used drilling wires in addition, for internal direction of the compressing force of the staples. After osteosynthesis 21 of the 22 scaphoids healed. Three clamps were removed after the bone had healed. One staple broke with the bone in an accident. Our first impressions suggest that thermoplastic Nitinol staples are ideal for compression osteosynthesis of the scaphoid bone for the treatment of displaced fractures or pseudarthroses in the middle third. Their use offers advantages over osteosynthesis with screws. Because our experience with these staples was so good we shortened the period of immobilization from 12 to 6 weeks.
Notes: Die sog.

Notes: Summary The microsurgical implantation of a saphenous vascular axis into free transplanted autologous isolated rib segments in Beagle dogs led to complete revascularization of the bone after two, three and four weeks. Indian ink and Mercox-injected specimens showed a vascular network which penetrated the entire cortical layer. Semi-thin sections revealed osteoblasts and osteoclasts visible in the canals of the revascularized cortical layer, while the control specimen without vessel implantation showed nothing but ground substance. The revascularized bones did not contain any necrotic areas. The newly formed vascular system consisted of arteries, veins and their anastomoses. The veins appeared to produce a greater number of new vessels than the arteries.
