Notes: Summary A systematic study of the structures of the base of the skull was performed with CT. The findings in 141 pathological cases are described. The value and some limitations of this kind of investigation are described and discussed. A comparison with conventional tomography is made.

Notes: Abstract Mitochondrial diseases result from structural, biochemical or genetic defects of mitochondria, which contain the respiratory chain. They usually affect children and young adults. We report the CT and MRI findings in 17 patients under 14 years of age, the youngest reported to date, with various mitochondrial diseases. Although imaging studies may be normal negative in the early stages, follow-up usually shows many abnormalities, which depend on clinical status and the disease. We have recognised a spectrum of findings that can be divided into four patterns: nonspecific myelin lesions (8/17); grey-matter nuclei involvement (6/17); a leukodystrophic pattern; and calcification of the brain (1/17), although mixed forms, particularly myelin and grey-matter lesions are frequent.

Notes: Summary Mortality of neonatal pine beauty moth larvae varied from 0% to 100% depending on the duration of food deprivation and temperature. At 20°C and 100% RH all larvae had died by the fourth day of food deprivation, whereas at 10°C and 100% RH larvae survived for twelve days without food. Although larvae were able to survive at 15°C for up to seven days without food, establishment on thier host at this temperature was seriously affected by three days of starvation. No establishment took place after four days of starvation at 15°C. At 10°C establishment was significantly affected by starvation but not to such a marked degree. Establishment at both 15°C and 10°C was enhanced if the larvae were presented with a highly suitable host. The mean relative growth rate of those larvae reaching fifth instar was unaffected by the duration of their prefeeding starvation period. However, overall mean relative growth rates of the larvae were significantly affected by the duration of the starvation period. The implications of these results are discussed in relation to the population dynamics of this insect.

Notes: Abstract Ultrasound-guided transcervical tubal cannulation (TC-TEST) was used to replace embryos to the fallopian tubes in 17 women whose fallopian tubes were inaccessible by the abdominal route but where at least one tube was shown to be freely patent on a preliminary hsterosalpingogram investigation. In two further cases, the fallopian tubes proved impossible to cannulate, and along with two instances where difficulty was experienced, a common underlying feature was an arcuate or septate configuration of the uterus. Three pregnancies ensued (17%) in cases where the procedure was free of difficulty and the transfers were demonstrably intratubal: two went to term and the third resulted in an ectopic pregnancy. The procedure has so far not shown a benefit over conventional IVF-ET and probably should be avoided in women with any type of tubal disorder.

Notes: Abstract A case of heterotopic or combined intrauterine and tubal ectopic pregnancy is described following in vitro fertilization and the transfer of five four-cell embryos. The phenomenon is known to be related to ovarian stimulation by gonadotropin therapy, and there is an increased risk with underlying tubal disease. This patient had both variables. Techniques applied at the time of embryo transfer are also implicated, namely, the use of culture medium with 50% maternal serum to convey the embryos to the uterus, the catheterization method, and the position of the patient during transfer.
