Notes: Abstract Male rhesus monkeys were trained to perform an instrumental avoidance conditioned response. They were then paired in the “cooperative conditioning” paradigm, a situation designed to measure the quality of nonverbal communication by changes in facial expression. A “responder monkey” was able to perform discriminated instrumental avoidance responses by processing facial expressive cues provided through a closed circuit television picture of a “stimulus monkey” which was receiving presentations of the conditioned stimulus. Oral administration of 1.0 mg/kg of delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (delta-9-THC) to the stimulus animal, the responder, both animals, or neither animal was given in all possible combinations of pairings to determine if delta-9-THC affects the expressiveness of the stimulus monkey or the sensitivity of the responder to the expressions of others. The drug impaired the display of facial expression in “stimulus” subjects but enhanced the ability of “responders” to discriminate the expressions of their partners. Measures of heart rate during cooperative conditioning revealed that delta-9-THC lowered cardiac rates of responder monkeys.

Notes: Abstract In this paper we generalize Rock's theory regarding the underpricing of IPOs. In Rock's model, informed investors have a firm-specific informational advantage pertaining to a firm's cash flow. We derive the new results that the level of beta and the size of the market risk premium positively affect underpricing. These implications extend the adverse selection theory and further distinguish this theory from the current state of signalling theories of underpricing. The results put the “hot and cold” issue markets phenomenon in a theoretical context. Empirical results are consistent with the theoretical propositions and provide support for Rock's theory of underpricing.

Notes: Abstract In the past, hypothesis testing in medicine has employed the paradigm of the repeatable experiment. In statistical hypothesis testing, an unbiased sample is drawn from a larger source population, and a calculated statistic is compared to a preassigned critical region, on the assumption that the comparison could be repeated an indefinite number of times. However, repeated experiments often cannot be performed on human beings, due to ethical or economic constraints. We describe a new paradigm for hypothesis testing which uses only rearrangements of data present within the observed data set. The token swap test, based on this new paradigm, is applied to three data sets from cardiovascular pathology, and computational experiments suggest that the token swap test satisfies the Neyman Pearson condition.
