Description / Table of Contents:
Notes:
Summary Lesions of the small bowel are rare causes of gastointestional bleeding. If severe bleeding occurs, peptic ulcer and esophageal varices of lesions in the colon or rectum must be excluded first. Purposeful attempts at diagnosis should be made after replacement of blood loss, e.g. X-ray examination of the whole gastrointesinal tract after a barium meal or enema, panendoscopy, selective arteriography and scintiscanning of abdominal organs. After these examinations selective surgery will be possible in most cases. Repeated episodes of occult bleeding result in hypochromic anemia as a main symptom. In bleeding from small bowel lesions, problems arise more in the failure to establish an early diagnosis than in the surgical treatment.
