Notes: Abstract A disease-specific measure was needed for use in an international clinical trial to evaluate an investigational drug for genital herpes. A new measure was developed initially in the UK and translated and adapted for use in France, Italy, Germany, Denmark, Spain and the USA. This paper describes the translation and adaptation of the USA measure. It also describes the assessment of internal consistency, reproducibility, content validity, and construct validity (convergent and discriminant) of the measure. Two outcome measures of the final genital herpes-specific measure were developed: (1) a 21-item symptoms subscale; and (2) a 20-item HRQOL subscale. Each measure was scored and analyzed separately; the psychometric testing discussed in this paper refers to the HRQOL subscale only. The internal consistency of the HRQOL subscale is high (r=0.93), as is the reproducibility measured with a two week interval (r=0.85). Convergent validity is moderate to high. (Fleming Self-Regard subscale,r=0.48; SF-36 Social Functioning dimensionr=0.59; SF-36 Mental Health dimensionr=0.50). The number of herpes outbreaks in the past year was a significant predictor of scores on the HRQOL subscale (0–1 outbreaks, mean=82.1; 2+ outbreaks, mean=72.1,p=0.058) suggesting discriminant validity. The measure is currently in a phase III clinical trial including anti-viral therapy where the question of responsiveness can be addressed.

Notes: For some time, polyimides have enjoyed a significant degree of superiority over the other classes of thermo-oxidatively stable polymers. This superiority is, however, offset by the tremendous difficulty associated with the processing of polyimides. In an effort to understand these difficulties and their causes, several experiments were performed which reflect the roles that reaction temperature and hydrolysis (caused by the presence of water) play during amidization and imidization. Temperatures between 0° and 120°C were found to result in progressively lower-viscosity polyamic acids whose equivalent weights varied only slightly with increasing reaction temperatures. The presence of hydroxide ions from water were shown to cause degradation of the polymer, and the combination of temperatures above 120°C and hydroxide ions results in the rapid degradation of the polymer and lower molecular weight polyimides.

Notes: The absorption spectra of a series of polyamic acids prepared using various reaction conditions were studied using the ultraviolet (UV), visible, and near-infrared (IR) ranges. The near-IR proved most valuable; the amidization and imidization processes could be followed by observing the change of intensities of the 1950-nm combination amine band and a band at 2300 nm assumed to be a function of the amide group.

Notes: Plasma-polymerized styrene (PPS) thin films (several hundred to several thousand Å thick) have been prepared under a variety of discharge conditions in a tubular reactor inductively coupled to a radio frequency (13.56 MHz) power supply. Studies have focussed on the correlation of deposited polymer structure, evidenced both at the film surface (via XPS analysis) and in the bulk polymer (via transmission FT-IR analysis) with controllable plasma parameters (coupled rf power, monomer flow rate, monomer pressure). It has been determined that the relative number of phenyl rings incorporated into the film intact is an inverse function of the power per styrene molecule ratio. Polymer deposition rate was found to be a strong function of styrene flow rate and substrate temperature. Plausible elements of the styrene plasma polymerization mechanism will be considered.

Notes: The condensation of bisketomethylene monomers with either 4,6-dibenzoyl-1,3-phenylenediamine or 2,5-dibenzoyl-1,4-phenylenediamine catalyzed by acid affords high molecular weight polymers containing the anthrazoline and isoanthrazoline units in the polymer main chain. Base is not an effective catalyst for the production of high molecular weight polymer. The phenyl substitution on the anthrazoline and isoanthrazoline units increases the solubility of these polymers over those in which phenyl substitution is absent. The rodlike character of these polymers, which can be altered by positional isomerism in the chain, has an effect on the solution properties.
