Notes: The intramolecular oligooxa[3n.3]paracyclophane quinhy-drones 2-5 (with n = 3 to 6) were synthesized and their interactions with alkali and alkaline earth metal and mercury(II) ions were studied by electron absorption and NMR spectroscopy. Remarkable enhancements of the CT absorptions were observed by complexation with metal ions of the pentaoxa[15.3]paracyclophane quinhydrone 4 and the hexaoxa[18.3]paracyclophane quinhydrone 5 to the corresponding complexes 6a-e and 7, respectively. The various donor-acceptor orientations and the crown ether-like complexation in the calcium complex 6d, the mercury complex 6e and the barium complex 7 were determined by X-ray analysis. Moreover, the X-ray structures of the tetramethoxy-2,5,8-trioxa[9.3]paracyclophane 8a, a precursor of the quinhydrone 2, and of the pentaoxa[15.3](2,5)-p-benzoquinonophane 20, the product of oxidative demethylation of the quinhydrone 4, are given. For comparison with the cyclic quinhydrones acyclic analogs are also described.

Notes: ---For comparison to the recently described 2,3,6,7-tetrakis(dimethylamino)naphthalene (1) the three isomers 2,3, and 4 were synthesized. The basicities of this group of isomers are strongly dependent upon the different mutual orientations of the pairs of dimethylamino substituents: only the isomers 3 and, partially, 4, both with dimethylamino groups in adjacent peri-positions of the naphthalene, are strong “proton sponges”. For the isomers 1 and 2 with the same number and kind of twofold dimethylamino substituents in neighbouring ortho-positions, however, no significant basicity increase is observed. To explain this difference between the two groups of isomers it is suggested that in the ortho-pairs of 1 and 2 the C-N bonds diverge considerably, leading to an increased N···N distance and consequently to less stable [N···H···N]+ hydrogen bonds in contrast to the parallel C-N bonds in the peri-substituted isomers 3 and 4. X-ray crystal structure analyses of the bases and of some of the salts derived therefrom were solved and are discussed. Cyclic voltammetry indicates that 1 to 4 are strong electron donors, reacting easily to radical cations or dications which with suitable acids have been obtained as salts.

Notes: ---1,2,4,5-Tetrakis(dimethylamino)benzene (4) and 2,3,6,7-tetrakis(dimethylamino)naphthalene (5) were prepared and structurally determined. Electron-donor functions, protonation, and the geometry of intramolecular hydrogen bonds are discussed. By oxidation of 4 to its dication the benzenoid aromaticity is cancelled in favour of two independent cyanine-type units as determined by X-ray structure analysis.

Notes: -The acceptor-porphyrin cyclophanes 2 and 4 with pyromellitic diimide (1) as strong electron-acceptor, and the corresponding porphyrin zinc complexes 3 and 5 were prepared by a route which differs considerably from that in the syntheses of previously prepared electron-acceptor porphyrin cyclophanes. The conformations of these electron-acceptor-porphyrin cyclophanes are discussed based on 1H-NMR and the X-ray structural analysis of 2. According to the results obtained, the plane of 1 and that of the porphyrin unit (at least in the crystalline state) are neither close nor parallel to each other. An unusual dihedral orientation of the donor and acceptor planes was detected for 2.

Notes: The synthesis of 1,8-diazacyclotetradeca-4,11-diyne (4) was accomplished by reaction of 1,6-dibromo-3-hexyne (11) with ammonia. Similarly, the preparation of 1-azacyclotetradeca-4,11-diyne (5) was achieved from 1,13-dibromotrideca-3,11-diyne (10) and ammonia. The reaction of α,ω-diamines of linear hydrocarbons of the chain length C4 to C10 with 11 yielded the corresponding bicyclic diynes 23-29. The reaction of 4 with 11 yielded 1,8-diazabicyclo[6.6.6]icosa-4,11,16-triyne (14). Similarly, the reaction of 4 with 1,4-dibromo-2-butyne yielded 1,8-diazabicyclo[6.6.4]octadeca-4,11,16-triyne (31). The molecular structures of 1,8-diisopropyl-1,8-diazacyclotetradeca-4,11-diyne (13a), as well as of 14, 24, 27 and 31 were studied by means of the X-ray technique. It was found that 13a adopts a chair-like conformation (C2h) with an equatorial orientation of the isopropyl groups. In 14, 24, 27, and 31 the 14-membered rings adopt a twist-boat conformation. The distance between the nitrogen atoms varies between 4.662(2) and 5.189(2) Å. In the case of 14, 24 and 27 the nitrogen atoms are pyramidalized and point inside the cage while in 31 the substituents at each nitrogen atom and the nitrogen atoms are situated in one plane.

Notes: The syntheses of tetraalkynylated tetrasulfido[20]annulenes 2a-d are described. Treatment of the corresponding brominated tetrasulfido[20]annulene 5a (easily available by McMurry coupling of the brominated 2,2′-bithiophene-5,5′-dicarbaldehydes, 3a) with various acetylenes in the presence of Pd(II) and Cu(I) in NH(iPr)2 yields acetylenic tetrasulfido[20]annulenes 2a-d.

Notes: -The introduction of alkynyl groups into the 2,3-positions of the 1,4-diazabuta-1,3-diene (DAD) backbone succeeds along two complementary synthetic routes either by condensing triisopropylsilyl-terminated dialkynyl-1,2-diones with primary aromatic amines or by a palladium-mediated alkynylation of bis(imidoyl chlorides). X-ray crystallographic analyses of two dialkynyl DAD derivatives reveals their planar (E-s-trans-E) conformations in the solid state. However, the central CC bond of both DAD backbones investigated has a length of 1.491(2) Å, and is therefore too long to indicate efficient delocalization across the DAD core. The UV/Vis spectra of dialkynyl DADs demonstrate that their absorptions in comparison to those of non-alkynyl DADs are bathochromically shifted by more than 40 nm, thereby demonstrating the suitability of the title compounds for developing NIR chromophores. The electron absorption properties of differentially N,N′-disubstituted dialkynyl DADs gave no indication for a push-pull effect across the DAD skeleton and suggest the ynimine moiety as the active chromophore of dialkynyl DADs. The electrochemical properties of the title compounds were determined by cyclo- and steady state voltammetry and show that introducing alkynyl groups leads to more easily reducible DAD systems. Again, the perception of dialkynyl DADs as covalently linked, but electronically decoupled ynimine units is corroborated by the redox potential of a differentially N,N′-disubstituted dialkynyl DAD. Similar conclusions were drawn from semiempirical MO (PM3) calculations of dialkynyl DADs.
