Notes: Abstract The genome of Bradyrhizobium japonicum and B. elkanii contains multiple copies of the repeated DNA sequence RSα. A collection of 18 B. japonicum, 4 B. elkanii and 72 other bacterial strains was screened by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) using a pair of primers specific for RSα. Only strains of B. japonicum and B. elkanii gave the predicted amplification product. Restriction analysis of PCR products obtained from different strains of B. japonicum showed that the RSα sequence was generally conserved. The usefulness of RSα as a specific probe for Bradyrhizobium strains capable of nodulating soybean was also demonstrated.

Notes: Brewer et al. [1] have established sequence I for the first 34 amino acid residues of human parathyroid hormone. It differs in 6 and 5 positions respectively from the corresponding bovine [2] [3] and porcine [4] hormone sequences. The synthesis of the protected tetratriacontapeptide II by the fragment-coupling approach and its purification by counter-current distribution are described. Removal of the protecting groups by acidolysis then gave I in high purity.I displays hypercalcemic activity in the thyroparathyroidectomized rat indicating that the amino terminal part also constitutes the hormonally active region of human parathyroid hormone.

Notes: Copper 2p3/2 x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS) measurements and near-edge x-ray absorption spectroscopy (NEXAFS) studies of copper-doped ZnO thin films were carried out in order to understand the role of the dopants in increasing the film resistivity. c-Axis-oriented ZnO films (thickness 120 nm) were deposited by r.f. sputtering on Cr-coated SiO2/Si substrates and subsequently implanted with metallic copper (0.5 at.%). After implantation, XPS results indicated that the dopant consists of a mixture of Cu+ and Cu0. The c-axis film resistivity was found to decrease to 7×107 Ω · cm (prior to implantation: 5×1010 Ω · cm). Oxygen annealing resulted in complete oxidation of the dopants in the film surface and bulk (Cu2+) as indicated by XPS and bulk-sensitive fluorescence NEXAFS. The film resistivity increased to 2×1011 Ω · cm, which can be explained in terms of electron trapping by Cu 3d hole states of Cu2+. The NEXAFS results suggested that the copper dopants after oxygen annealing have preferred orientations in the ZnO matrix. Additional vacuum annealing reduced Cu2+ ions to Cu+, which demonstrated that the observed decrease in film resistivity from 2×1011-107 Ω · cm is due to the Cu+ oxidation state.

Notes: The growth process of ZnO films on Si(100) by single-source chemical vapour deposition (CVD) was investigated. During the initial stages of growth (film thickness 〈30Å), oxidation of the Si substrate was observed which resulted in an interfacial region consisting of ZnO and Si oxides. For film thicknesses in excess of 40 Å the composition of the film approaches that of a continuous ZnO film. It is suggested that the mixed interfacial region strongly influences the adhesion of the film on the substrate by providing Zn-O-Si-type bonds. The oxidation of the substrate during the initial film growth may have direct implications on the type of contact layers that can be used in ZnO thin-film devices using single-source CVD techniques.

Notes: The new bulk, melt-textured grown composite Nd0.5Y0.5Ba2Cu3O7-δ, which also forms large single crystals, has the standard high-Tc 123 orthorhombic structure when oxygenated and a very high critical current density in a magnetic field of 0.5 T. Both of these results were not anticipated, as the Nd and Y ions are significantly different in size, while the absence of Y211 and/or Nd422 precipitates within the 123 grains indicates that a new pinning mechanism is responsible for the highJc. A possible mechanism has been attributed in part to the partial substitution of Nd3+ in the Ba2+ site, but to further understand this material and to further optimize its processing route for application purposes, we have carried out an XPS study of its electronic structure using cleaved surfaces of single crystals. The data obtained are analysed and discussed in terms of that found for high-quality Re 123 single crystals where Re is either Nd or Y.
