Notes: Summary Six cases of dedifferentiated leiomyosarcoma of the small and large bowel are presented with histological, ultrastructural and immunohistochemical examination. One case arose in the jejunum, two in the ileum, and the other three in the large intestine. The tumours were submucosal in four cases with large areas of ulceration; two were polypoid. Four tumours showed typical leiomyosarcomatous appearance with dedifferentiated components and two were typical leiomyosarcomas at the primary site with differentiated components only in metastatic foci. By immunohistochemistry, typical leiomyosarcomatous areas showed a positive reaction for muscle-specific actin (MSA), MB1, MB2 and myosin. In contrast, desmin-positive cells were scattered throughout the tumour or were not present. Tumour cells in dedifferentiated components were positive for alpha-1-antitrypsin and alpha-1-antichymotrypsin in all cases but one; neuron specific enolase, MB1, MB2 and myosin were positive with variety. MSA was faintly positive in only a few tumour cells of two cases and desmin was not detected in any of the cases studied. Ultrastructurally, tumour cells in typical leiomyosarcomatous areas demonstrated evident smooth muscle features, although in dedifferentiated areas they lacked such features except in one case. Our results indicate that dedifferentiated elements may derive from ordinary leiomyosarcoma and loose muscle features due to dedifferentiation.

Notes: Abstract Two rare cases of intestinal epithelioid angiosarcoma arising in the sigmoid colon and small intestine are reported. The small intestinal tumours were located in the duodenum and upper jejunum. All tumours showed reddish-black protuberant masses with comparatively clear margins. Histology reveals solid and epithelioid growth of large polygonal cells, mimicking undifferentiated carcinoma. Vascular differentiation such as lumina containing red cells and intracytoplasmic vacuolization is noticed. Intense immunoreactivity toUlex europaeus agglutinin I and JC70 (CD31), and sporadic positive reaction to factor VIII related antigen were detected in one case but not in the other. However, both tumours have cells which show intense endothelin-1 immunoreactivity. Positive immunostaining occurred with low molecular weight keratins suggesting epithelial differentiation and suggested epithelioid angiosarcoma as a diagnosis, a specific entity within angiosarcoma. Because of their histological features, epithelioid angiosarcomas may be confused with undifferentiated carcinomas. Endothelin-1-like immunoreactivity seems to be a good marker for this type of angiosarcoma, even when the tumour cells lack usual marker substances for endothelial cells.

Notes: Abstract Ga2O3 and Ga2O3/TiO2 catalysts were found to be effective agents for the dehydrogenation of ethane to ethene in the presence of carbon dioxide at 650 °C. The activity of the Ga2O3 and Ga2O3/TiO2 catalysts in the presence of CO2 was 2–4 times higher than that without CO2. Ethene yields reached ca. 20–25% and selectivity was ca. 70–90% at 650°C in the 17% ethane and 83% CO2 feed at an SV of 9,000 ml/(g‐cat h). The presence of CO2 markedly promoted dehydrogenation of ethane over Ga2O3 and Ga2O3/TiO2 catalysts. Furthermore, the promoting effect of CO2 on the aromatization of ethane and ethene over a Ga2O3+H/ZSM‐5 catalyst was also observed above 650 °C. Aromatics yields were higher than those without CO2.

Notes: Abstract We describe a gastric carcinoma cell line that has been maintained in vitro for more than 10 years and retains the capacity to produce a large amount of alpha-fetoprotein. This cell line was isolated from a metastatic lymph node of a 63-year-old male patient with advanced gastric carcinoma (T2N3P0H0M0) who showed high serum levels of alpha-fetoprotein. The primary tumor was moderately differentiated tubular adenocarcinoma and the lymph node was poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma without any particular pattern. The cultured cells grew as densely packed islet-like colonies with small polygonal cells. Electron microscopy revealed cells abundant in cytoplasmic organelles, with some cellular attachments being tight with junctional complexes and some being loose across intercellular spaces. The free cell surface had microvilli. The population doubling-time was 152 h at passage 58. Chromosomal analysis revealed the modal number to be 77, with numerous karyotype abnormalities. The tumorigenicity of the cultured cells in athymic nude mice was positive only when they were subcutaneously transplanted beneath a plastic plate, but when the cells were transplanted subcutaneously or administered by intrasplenic injection in intact or weakly irradiated nude mice, no tumorigenicty was shown. The cell line produced tumor-associated antigens, such as alpha-fetoprotein, carcinoembryonic antigen, and tissue polypeptide antigen. This cell line may be useful for comparative studies of different types of gastric carcinoma and alpha-fetoproteins of different origins.

Notes: Abstract Dehydrogenation of isopropylbenzene to α-methylstyrene was carried out using various supported metal oxide catalysts in the presence of carbon dioxide. An activated carbon-supported vanadium oxide catalyst afforded a high activity in carbon dioxide atmosphere: the α-methylstyrene yield in carbon dioxide atmosphere was two times greater than that in an argon atmosphere at 723 K. In order to investigate the role of carbon dioxide in this reaction, we carried out temperature-programmed reduction (TPR) studies using both fresh and used catalysts. The TPR profiles clearly indicate that carbon dioxide could keep the surface of vanadium oxide at a high oxidation state.

Notes: Abstract We report herein the case of a 32-year-old woman who underwent distal gastrectomy with D2 lymph node dissection for gastric cancer. Microscopic examination of the resected specimen revealed signet-ring cell carcinoma of the stomach with lymph node metastases, and endosalpingiosis in the normal lymph nodes. There was no evidence of malignancy in the peritoneal cavity. To our knowledge, no other case of endosalpingiosis in the lymph nodes along the stomach has ever been reported. The possible significance of endosalpingiosis is discussed following this case report.
