Summary In a balanced, fully crossed-over, double-blind investigation on healthy young adults, 5 mg and 10 mg of nitrazepam reduced parieto-occipital EEG activity more slowly but more markedly than 100 mg and 200 mg of sodium amylobarbitone. Differences between the drugs, but not between doses, were statistically significant. All four treatments differed significantly from placebo in respect of the level attained after sixty minutes. Differences in speed of onset were detected within six minutes of giving the drug by mouth.
