    Notes: Abstract The responses of temperate and boreal forest ecosystems to increased nitrogen (N) inputs have been varied, and the responses of soil N pools have been difficult to measure. In this study, fractions and pool sizes of N were determined in the forest floor of red spruce stands at four sites in the northeastern U.S. to evaluate the effect of increased N inputs on forest floor N. Two of the stands received 100 kg N ha-1 yr-1 for three years, one stand received 34 kg N ha-1 yr-1 for six years, and the remaining stand received only ambient N inputs. No differences in total N content or N fractions were measured in samples of the Oie and Oa horizons between treated and control plots in the three sites that received N amendments. The predominant N fraction in these samples was amino acid N (31-45% of total N), followed by hydrolyzable unidentified N (16-31% of total N), acid-soluble N (18-22% of total N), and NH4 + (9-13% of total N). Rates of atmospheric deposition varied greatly among the four stands. Ammonium N and amino acid N concentrations in the Oie horizon were positively related to wet N deposition, with respective r2 values of 0.92 and 0.94 (n = 4, p 〈 0.05). These relationships were somewhat stronger than that observed between atmospheric wet N deposition and total N content of the forest floor, suggesting that these pools retain atmospherically deposited N. The NH4 + pool may represent atmospherically deposited N that is incorporated into organic matter, whereas the amino acid N pool could result from microbial immobilization of atmospheric N inputs. The response of forest floor N pools to applications of N may be masked, possibly by the large soil N pool, which has been increased by the long-term input of N from atmospheric deposition, thereby overwhelming the short-term treatments.

    Notes: This paper deals with the effect of non-linearly flexible hysteritic joints on the static and dynamic response of space frames. It is shown that a complementary energy approach based on a weak form of the compatibility condition as a whole of a frame member, and of the joint equilibrium conditions for the frame, is best suited for the analysis of flexibly jointed frames. The present methodology represents an extension of the authors' earlier work14 on rigidly connected frames. In the present case also, an explicit expression for the tangent stiffness matrix is given when (i) each frame member, along with the flexible connections at its ends, is represented by a single finite element, (ii) each member can undergo arbitrarily large rigid rotations and only moderate relative rotations and (iii) the non-linear bending-stretching coupling is accounted for in each member. Several examples, with both quasi-static and dynamic loading, are included, to illustrate the accuracy and efficiency of the developed methodology.

    Notes: This paper deals with elasto-plastic large deformation analysis of space-frames. It is based on a complementary energy approach. A methodology is presented wherein: (i) each member of the frame, modelled as an initially straight space-beam, is sought to be represented by a single finite element, (ii) each member can undergo arbitrarily large rigid rotations, but only moderately large relative rotations; (iii) a plastic-hinge method, with arbitrary locations of the hinges along the beam, is used to account for plasticity, (iv) the non-linear bendin-stretching coupling is accounted for in each member, (v) the applied loading may be non-conservative and (vi) an explicit expression for the tangent stiffness matrix of each element is given under conditions (i) to (v). Several examples, with both quasi-static and dynamic loading, are given to illustrate the accuracy and efficiency of the approaches presented.

    Notes: This paper presents two simple quadrilateral C0 plate bending elements with explicit element stiffness matrix. The element formulation is based on assumed element stress fields and the interrelated transverse displacement and rotation along element boundaries. The interrelated edge displacements not only can result in higher-order displacements interpolations for higher accuracy element and overcome the shear locking in thin plate analysis encountered by C0 plate elements, but can also unify the four-noded quadrilateral element and its corresponding three-noded triangular element. The latter cannot be achieved by the assumed displacement formulation. The numerical examples demonstrate the accuracy and robustness of the present assumed stress C0 plate elements.

    Notes: In this paper, a simplified boundary integral equation--finite-element method is proposed for the bending analysis of thin clamped orthotropic plates according to Kirchhoff's theory. The solution procedure is based on the direct boundary element method earlier developed for isotropic plate bending problems. The integral equations necessary for solving the orthotropic plate bending problem are derived after transformation of such a problem into an equivalent isotropic plate bending problem by introducing an unknown transverse loading distributed in the interior domain of the plate. A simple discretization scheme is described in this paper for the plate boundary and its interior domain. Some computational examples are presented in this paper, and the numerical results illustrate a satisfactory accuracy of the method.
