    Notes: Abstract Some 840 bacille Calmette-Guérin (BCG)-vaccinated healthy controls and tuberculosis patients from two Chinese hospitals were submitted to comparative skin tests with purified protein derivative of tuberculin (PPD; as reference) and with the antigen complex A60 from Mycobacterium bovis BCG. In a first trial, including 581 persons (185 healthy juveniles, 180 healthy adults and 216 tuberculosis patients), a limited dose of A60 (1μg) was used. Performance of the A60 test was similar to that of 5 I.U. PPD for controls (cut-off values=5 mm induration diameter), but lower than that seen for tuberculosis patients (10 mm cut-off values). A second survey was conducted on 259 persons (109 recently revaccinated healthy persons, considered as tuberculin-negative in the first trial, and 150 tuberculosis patients), using a higher dose of A60 (2 μg) and the same dose of PPD (5 I.U.). Similar results were obtained with the two tests in all cases, thus supporting the possibility of PPD replacement by A60 in cutaneous testing. The pattern of induration diameter distribution in healthy subjects who took part in the first testing round (64% positively rate) was displaced to the inactivity side (with a peak at 5 to 9-mm diameter), in comparison with the second round (90% positivity rate and peak at 10–14 mm). This indicates a progressive fading of cellular immunity reactions after BCG vaccination. In tuberculosis patients, no correlation was found among the following three parameters: positivity at cutaneous testing (with PPD or A60), titer of anti-A60 mycobacterial immunoglobulins in blood (IgG titer higher than cut-off line) and presence of mycobacteria in sputum.

    Notes: Abstract. Glycosylation of ion channel proteins dramatically impacts channel function. Here we characterize the asparagine (N)-linked glycosylation of voltage-gated K+ channel α subunits in rat brain and transfected cells. We find that in brain Kv1.1, Kv1.2 and Kv1.4, which have a single consensus glycosylation site in the first extracellular interhelical domain, are N-glycosylated with sialic acid-rich oligosaccharide chains. Kv2.1, which has a consensus site in the second extracellular interhelical domain, is not N-glycosylated. This pattern of glycosylation is consistent between brain and transfected cells, providing compelling support for recent models relating oligosaccharide addition to the location of sites on polytopic membrane proteins. The extent of processing of N-linked chains on Kv1.1 and Kv1.2 but not Kv1.4 channels expressed in transfected cells differs from that seen for native brain channels, reflecting the different efficiencies of transport of K+ channel polypeptides from the endoplasmic reticulum to the Golgi apparatus. These data show that addition of sialic acid-rich N-linked oligosaccharide chains differs among highly related K+ channel α subunits, and given the established role of sialic acid in modulating channel function, provide evidence for differential glycosylation contributing to diversity of K+ channel function in mammalian brain.

    Notes: Explicit analytical expressions are obtained for the rate of nucleation over different paths in a binary system. It is shown that anisotropy in reaction rates and anisotropy in the free energy surface can cause nucleation to occur bypassing the saddle point. Homomolecular nucleation is demonstrated to be the natural limit of binary nucleation as the concentration of one component goes to zero. Explicit expressions are also obtained for the time lag of binary nucleation by using the singular perturbation approach. It is shown that the time lag associated with different paths of nucleation is essential in determining the relative importance of different nucleation pathways.

    Notes: A closed-form expression for the effect of cluster scavenging on the rate of homogeneous nucleation of a vapor in the presence of continuum regime particles is obtained by solving the kinetic equation of nucleation by the method of singular perturbation. The reduction in nucleation rate of a condensing species at a given supersaturation is shown to be dependent largely on the number concentration, the size of the sink particles, and the molecular number concentration of the background gas. The reduction in the rate of nucleation due to the cluster scavenging by transition regime particles is also discussed.

    Notes: Differential reflectance (DR) is one of the modulation spectroscopies, and its modulation signal arises from the differential reflectance due to the spatial inhomogeneity of the sample. There are several methods to achieve the difference reflectance and we report here an experimental configuration using sample rotation. This configuration looks similar to that adopted previously by reflectance difference spectroscopy (RDS), however in the DR experiments we trace the signal synchronizing with the fundamental rotation frequency (f ) of the sample. In RDS one used the second harmonic frequency of the rotation (2f ) as the reference frequency. We check this method with an InGaAs/GaAs quantum well and an AlGaAs/GaAs heterojunction bipolar transistor (HBT). Both samples show well resolved spectral features which are in good agreement with photoreflectance measurements. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.
