Notes: A numerical method using impulse analysis of a transmission-line matrix is used to model the scattering of underwater acoustic waves. The method is demonstrated by observation of plane and curved wavefronts travelling through the medium, and by plane wavefronts being scattered by a reflecting boundary.

Notes: The issue of developing effective and robust schemes to implement a class of the Ogden-type hypereiastic constitutive models, for large-strain analysis of rubber-like materials, is addressed. To this end, explicit forms for the corresponding material tangent-stiffness tensors are developed, and these are valid for the entire deformation range; i.e. with both distinct as well as repeated principal-stretch values. Throughout the analysis the various implications of the underlying property of separability of the strain-energy functions are exploited, thus leading to compact final forms of the tensor expressions. In particular, this facilitated the treatment of the complex cases of uncoupled volumetric/deviatoric formulations for incompressible materials, which are becoming increasingly popular in recent years. The forms derived are also amenable for use with symbolic-manipulation packages for systematic code generation.

Notes: The simulation of flows around single cylinders, tandem cylinders and infinite chains of cylinders with the lattice gas method is presented. The effects of the ratio of the cylinder diameter to channel width and different outflow boundary conditions are discussed. Results obtained applying different lattice gas models are given. Drag coefficient, wake length and Strouhal number are compared with experimental data. The agreement between numerical and experimental results is satisfactory.

Notes: In this work, we show the implementation of two explicit three-dimensional finite-difference beam propagation methods (BPM) on two different parallel computers, namely a transputer array and a Connection Machine (CM). To assess the performance of using parallel computers, serial computer codes of the two methods have ben implemented and a comparison between the speed of the serial and paralledl codes has been made. Large gains in the speed of the paralled FD-BPMs has been obtained compared to the serial implementations. In addition, a comparison between the performance of the transputer array and the CM in executing the two FD-BPMs has been discussed. Finally, to assess and compare the two methods, three different rib waveguides and three different directional couplers have been analysed and the results compared with published results.

Notes: In this paper we introduce and analyse a new Schur complement approximation based on incomplete Gaussian elimination. The approximate Schur complement is used to develop a multigrid method. This multigrid method has an algorithmic structure that is very similar to the algorithmic structure of classical multigrid methods. The resulting method is almost purely algebraic and has interesting properties with respect to variation in problem parameters.

Notes: The issue of developing effective and robust schemes to implement a class of the Ogden-type hyperelastic constitutive models is addressed. To this end, special purpose functions (running under MACSYMA) are developed for the symbolic derivation, evaluation, and automatic FORTRAN code generation of explicit expressions for the corresponding stress function and material tangent stiffness tensors. These explicit forms are valid over the entire deformation range, since the singularities resulting from repeated principal-stretch values have been theorectically removed. The required computational algorithms are outlined, and the resulting FORTRAN computer code is presented.

Notes: This paper describes an example of a numerical solution of an overland flow problem where a box scheme which is unconditionally stable nevertheless has to have a limit on the time step.
