    Notes: Abstract This report describes details of the sampling method and background of the population selected for bone density measurements. A list of inhabitants aged 40 to 79 years in Miyama Village, Wakayama Prefecture, was compiled based upon resident registration as of December, 1988. 1543 subjects consisting of 716 males and 827 females were identified. In order to measure bone density, a total of 400 subjects consisting of 200 males and 200 females were recruited from this list. Most were recruited from a centralized community and the remainder came from nearby areas, to give 50 people in each of eight age-sex groups. All of the selected people were contacted and agreed to participate. In Miyama Village, two large projects in relation to cancer and circulatory diseases are also being carried out as a part of national projects. As a consequence, Various information such as clinical history, personal history, blood analysis and so forth could be obtained for subjects who underwent bone density measurements. From these data, it was found that the percentages for smokers, drinkers and hypertensive subjects were similar to those of other communities and also to those in a nationwide survey. Moreover, we observed no abnormalities in serum calcium and phosphorus levels referable to bone turnover. These facts suggest that a representative sample population for measurements of bone density was drawn from the community.

    Notes: Abstract Reference values of bone mineral density (BMD) have mainly been based on hospital volunteers in Japan. Consequently, these values may be inappropriate for the use as a standard in the osteoporotic study. In order to establish reference values, BMD was measured of 400 age-stratified inhabitants of Miyama Village, utilizing dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (DEXA). The mean BMD of L2–L4 in males in each age group was 1.19±0.16 g/cm2 (mean±standard deviation) in 40's, 1.15±0.19 g/cm2 in 50's, 1.03±0.18 g/cm2 in 60's and 1.06±0.25 g/cm2 in 70's. The difference of BMD was statistically significant between the 50 and 60 age groups. On the other hand, in females the mean BMD of L2–L4 was 1.18±0.16 g/cm2 in 40's; 0.99±0.18 g/cm2 in 50's, 0.84±0.19 g/cm2 in 60's and 0.78±0.17 g/cm2 in 70's. The BMD was significantly lower in the 50 age group than in the 40 age group and was similarly lower in the 60 age group than in the 50 age group. The mean BMD of femoral neck in males was 0.98±0.14 g/cm2 in 40's, 0.91±0.12 g/cm2 in 50's, 0.83±0.11 g/cm2 in 60's and 0.78±0.11 g/cm2 in 70's. In females, the BMD of femoral neck was 0.88±0.11 g/cm2 in 40's, 0.75±0.11 g/cm2 in 50's, 0.68±0.11 g/cm2 in 60's and 0.63±0.10 g/cm2 in 70's. BMD of the femoral neck in an older age group was lower than that in a younger age group both in males and females.

    Notes: Abstract We studied the microscopic morphological changes in congenital hydrocephalus in the inbred rat, LEW/Jms, on gestational days 17, 18, and 20 and during the neonatal period to clarify the etiopathogenesis, focusing particularly on the aqueductal changes. At 1 day of age, ventriculomegaly was limited to the lateral and III ventricles, and the aqueduct was obstructed, with the appearance of simple stenosis. On gestational days 20 and 18, the hydrocephalic rats showed occluded aqueducts, which paralleled the finding of hydrocephalus in the newborn rats. On gestational day 17, all eight models examined showed the same size ventricles. However, an aqueductal obstruction was observed in one of them. The other seven rats showed the aqueduct patent. From these observations, it can be concluded that the rat shows an aqueductal obstruction on gestational day 17 and appears to develop hydrocephalus with age. The aqueductal obstruction was considered to be the primary change and not a secondary phenomenon. The site of obstruction was the anterior part of the aqueduct (level of anterior colliculus) at every stage. Aqueductal obstruction following the developmental anomaly of the midbrain in the embryonic stage might thus be the primary cause of congenital hydrocephalus in rats LEW/Jms.

    Notes: α-(Alkoxymethyl) acrylates, such as methyl α-(phenoxymethyl) acrylate, benzyl α-(methoxymethyl)acrylate (BMMA), benzyl α-(benzyloxymethyl)acrylate, and benzyl α-(tert-butoxymethyl)acrylate, were synthesized, and their polymerizability and the stereoregularity of the polymers obtained by radical and anionic methods were investigated. The radically obtained polymers were found to be atactic by 13C- and 1H-NMR analyses, but the polymers obtained with lithium reagents in toluene at -78°C were highly isotactic. Further, it is noteworthy that isotactic polymers were also produced with lithium reagents even in tetrahydrofuran. Effects of polymerization temperature and counter cation on stereoregularity were clearly observed in the polymerization of BMMA, and a potassium reagent afforded an almost atactic polymer. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
