Notizen: Summary Comparison of the contents of the postpharyngeal gland and cuticular hydrocarbons of five species of ant have shown them to contain the same compounds and to be characteristic of the species. For four species (Formica selysi, Camponotus lateralis, Camponotus vagus andManica rubida), quantitative similarity was very close, but more divergent in the fifth (Myrmica rubra). Glands and cuticle ofM. rubra queens were shown to be closely similar to those of workers, except the glands of queens are larger, but the cuticle of larvae was different from that of adult cuticle and postpharyngeal glands.

Notizen: Abstract Totally blind army ants carry out massive and highly organised foraging raids, apparently guided by chemical stimuli. Until now, this phenomenon has not been closely analysed. The existence of a trail pheromone in a postpygidial gland of anAenictus species has been demonstrated and the substances identified as methyl anthranilate and methyl nicotinate The pheromone consists of two parts: a primer effect, caused by methyl nicotinate, which prepares workers to follow trails, but is not itself followed, and a releaser effect, due to methyl anthranilate, which causes trail-following only in conjunction with the primer substance.

Notizen: Summary 3-Ethyl-2,5-dimethylpyrazine, found in the poison gland of workers, induces trail following in the Mediterranean harvester antMessor bouvieri. The poison gland contains on average 9 ng of this trail pheromone component. The alkaloids anabasine and anabaseine are also present in this gland, but induce no reaction in workers. Trail following is also induced by substances present in the Dufour gland, but the combined effect of both glands shows no synergism.

Notizen: Summary In all the species of theCataglyphis bicolor group examined yet, i.e.C. bicolor, C. diehli, C. isis, C. nodus, andC. viaticus, 2-methyl-1-hexanol is the characteristic substance and almost the only substance found in the mandibular glands. Its chirality has been determined inC. bicolor and shown to be exclusively (S)-2-methyl-1-hexanol.

Notizen: Abstract Chemical investigation of the Dufour gland contents of three species ofMyrmecia by GC and GC-MS showed thatM. gulosa andM. nigriceps contain predominantly linear hydrocarbons, whereasM. pilosula contains acetates, aldehydes, and propionates. The major components ofM. gulosa andM. nigriceps are (Z)-8-heptadecene, pentadecane, and heptadecane. Their chemical profiles are similar to each other and to that ofNothomyrmecia macrops, the most primitive living ant, placed by itself in a separate subfamily. The major components ofM. pilosula are hexadecyl acetate, (Z)-9-octadecenyl acetate, (Z)-11-eicosenyl acetate, and (Z)-11-eicosenal. Some geographical variation was observed in the relative proportions of the components. The chemotaxonomic significance for the primitive Australian ant subfamilies Myrmeciinae and Nothomyrmeciinae is considered. The possibility is discussed that 11-eicosenal or geranylcitronellol, minor components of the Dufour gland secretion ofM. gulosa, may be responsible for the aggressive behavior released by the natural stinging secretions.

Notizen: Abstract The Dufour glands of worker ants ofTetramorium caespitum, and the morphologically similarT. impurum are filled with similar, but species-specific mixtures of linear hydrocarbons and three homologous sesquiterpene corhpounds. Glands of workers ofT. caespitum contain, on average, 70 ng of oil containing C13 to C17 linear hydrocarbons withn-pentadecane (64%) and a mixture of pentadecenes (14%) as major components.T. impurum glands are smaller and contain an average of 40 ng of the same mixture but withn-pentadecane (49%) and a sesquiterpenoid compound (19%) the major components. Two isomeric pentadecenes, (Z)-6-pentadecene and (Z)-7-pentadecene are present in both species.T. semilaeve workers contain on average only 30 ng of a simple mixture of hydrocarbons with pentadecane contributing more than 90% of the total.

Notizen: Abstract The trail pheromone ofAcromyrmex subterraneus subterraneus consists simply of the heterocyclic ester methyl 4-methylpyrrole-2-carboxylate in the venom reservoir of workers at about 1.2 ng/ant. No pyrazines were detected, and no enhancement of trail-following was observed when pyrazines were added to the pyrrole compound.
