Notizen: Summary The subepithelial blood vessels of the dorsal surface of the tongue in young kittens has been studied by scanning electron microscopy of microcorrosion casts. These vessels entwine the vallate papillae distributed in the pharyngeal part of the tongue, form hairpin loops in association with the small conical papillae along the sides and at the tip of the tongue and establish regularly distributed subpapillary conglomerations over almost its entire oral part. These conglomerations lie directly on veins. Small arterioles reach the vessels surrounding the individual subpapillary conglomerations. By contrast with the arrangement of the superficial vascular bed in the tongue of the dog and some other mammals, no anastomoses between arteries and veins were observed in the kitten between the vessels which supply and drain the subepidermal capillaries.

Notizen: Summary Two types of glandular cells are present in the pars intermedia of the loach, Misgurnus fossilis. Basophils are characterized by the presence in their cytoplasm of numerous secretory granules containing electron-dense and homogeneous material and by scarce endoplasmic reticulum. ‘Weak’ acidophils contain in their cytoplasm abundant endoplasmic reticulum and numerous granules of different electron densities. The distal part of the neurohypophysis is composed of several types of neurosecretory axons, strongly branched pituicytes, numerous capillaries, and connective tissue elements. The axon terminals form the neuroglandular, neurovascular and neurointerstitial contacts. Some axon terminals are closely apposed to the basement membrane separating neurohypophysis from meta-adenohypophysis. At points of absence of continuity of this membrane, some neurosecretory axons become directly contiguous with cytoplasmic membranes of the intermedia cells.

Notizen: Summary The fine structure of the gas gland cells in Perca and Acerina was studied with the light- and electron microscope. In some of the animals the gas glands were stimulated by the single or repeated removal of the gas from the swimbladder. In this group of fishes the changes in the organization of cytoplasm of the gas gland cells accompanying an intense production of gas have been studied. In the control animals, cells of the gas gland are packed with granules of glycogen except in the perivascular region. A high and protracted activity of the gland results in the disappearance of glycogen, in an increase of the number of cytoplasmic structures, especially the Golgi complex and lysosome-like bodies, and in a very strong proliferation of the external nuclear membrane. The function of the glandular cells and possible causes for the observed alterations in the cytoplasmic organization during an increased gas production are discussed.
