Notes: Abstract Surgical repair of anterior abdominal wall defects is often complicated by a discrepancy between the eviscerated organs and the intra-abdominal space available. Primary closure of the abdominal wall may result in increased intra-abdominal pressure and consecutive circulatory impairment. We report the results of a retrospective and consecutive prospective study evaluating the influence of different witameters on mortality and morbidity in children with gastroschitis and omphalocele. Both studies demonstrated that real-time sonographic investigations, intraoperative Doppler duplex sonography, and colour-coded Doppler sonography provide the oppurtunity to collect objective intraoperative data. Our data indicate that intraoperative vascular assessment facilitates the discrimination between infants who benefit from primary closure and those in whom a staged repair is the treatment of choice.

Notes: Abstract Prenatal diagnosis of gastroschisis (GS) and omphalocele (OC) has allowed improved antenatal and perinatal management. It was the aim of this study to compare prenatal findings and assess fetal outcome. Twenty-four fetus with GS and 33 with OC were diagnosed prenatally. Maternal serum alpha-protein (MSAFP), sonographic (US), and perinatal data were analyzed. The average maternal age for GS was younger than for OC (24 vs. 30 years). The median MSAFP values were 7.7 multiples of median for GS and 3.6 for OC. The initial US diagnosis was made at 22 weeks for GS and at 19 weeks for OC. A pathological karyotype was observed in 4% of the fetuses with GS and 33% with OC. The mortality of fetuses with OC was twice as high as that of those with GS. Accurate prenatal diagnosis of GS and OC as well as their differentiation are of crucial importance for both counselling of the parents and the resulting antenatal consequences, and provide the basis for optimal interdisciplinary co-operation at a perinatal tertiary-care center.

Description / Table of Contents: By application of pressure-tight vessels, the thermal effects of the evaporation of volatile components may be eliminated during differential thermal analysis. Such vessels, developed for the „Differential Scanning Calorimeter“, are described, and some characteristic measurements with a thermosetting phenolic compound are reported.

Notes: Osseointegration of porous calcium phosphate ceramics evolves in several stages once implanted. Histologic analysis has often been used to evaluate the mechanism of integration of this material. Histologic parameters can be completed by physical analysis to obtain a semiquantitative evaluation of the osseointegration process. The histologic observation of hydroxyapatite (HA)-ceramic-containing bone sections was associated with proton-induced X-ray emission (PIXE) analysis and the results obtained by both methods were compared. Porous HA-ceramic cylinders were implanted in cortical bone of sheep femurs for periods ranging from 2 to 36 weeks. Thick sections of the implant containing bone were made at the end of the implantation period. A scanning line with two proton impacts 0.5 mm apart was plotted from the edges of cortical bone across the implanted ceramic and the X-rays produced were determined. Calcium, phosphorus, zinc, strontium, and iron contents were measured. Following PIXE analysis, the sections were surface-stained and observed under a light microscope to define the osseointegration index. Two regions of the curves were identified for each element characterizing either the bone tissue or the ceramic. Zinc and strontium present in the bone tissue but absent from the ceramics appeared after the 8th and the 12th implantation weeks, respectively. Iron present in the implant decreased with time, and calcium and phosphorus contents tended to be the same at the end of the implantation period in both curve regions. Histologic observation showed that immature bone invaded the pores of the outer layer of the ceramic as early as 2 weeks after implantation. Ceramics were totally osseointegrated 20 weeks after implantation. Osseointegration was apparently still evolving as judged by the PIXE method when histologic integration was considered complete. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Biomed Mater Res, 36, 315-324, 1997

Description / Table of Contents: On the basis of low-density polyethylenes with different molecular weight and pretreatment the influence of molecular structure and morphology on the stress crack resistance was investigated. The significance of the tie-molecules was proved also for this type of loading. Analogously to tensile strength also in the case of stress crack resistance a critical molecular mass of about 70000 g/mol is determined for the formation of tie-molecules. The efficiency of the tie-molecules can, however, be modified under the influence of shear or precipitation from the solution.

Description / Table of Contents: Subject of the present investigations is the description and application of the coacervative fractionation method for the separation of amounts of 500 to 700g low density polyethylene. The obtained fractions were characterized by their number and weight averages of molecular mass, the molecular inhomogeneity U, and the contraction factor gß, respectively. The fractions can be used for studies of structure-property relationships.
