    Notes: The oxygen induced reconstructed phases of the Ni{110} surface have been studied by time-of-flight scattering and recoiling spectrometry (TOF–SARS). The substrate structures are determined from experimental measurements of azimuthal angle (δ) and polar incident angle (α) anisotropies in the scattered Ne intensities coupled with classical trajectory simulations for shadow cone analysis. By monitoring features in the TOF–SARS scans that are unique to specific phases, it is possible to follow the migration of the first-layer Ni atoms as a function of O2 exposure. The results show that upon increasing exposures of the clean Ni{110}–(1×1) surface to O2, a series of LEED patterns [initial p(3×1), p(2×1), and final p(3×1)] is produced corresponding to three surface phases which differ only in the density of the first-layer Ni 〈001〉 rows. These nascent "added rows'' are stabilized by bonding to oxygen atoms which reside in the long-bridge positions along the 〈001〉 rows. Structural models for the three phases are confirmed from the TOF–SARS data and the inhibiting effects of carbon and sulfur impurities on the reconstruction is considered.

    Notes: We present results of a midinfrared vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser operating at 2.63 μm made of CdHgTe alloys. The resonator is constituted of two dielectric YF3/ZnS mirrors deposited after growth and after removal of the substrate. The top mirror reflectivity is increased step by step by deposition of an additional stack period allowing us to study the effect of mirror loss on lasing properties. With a reflectivity of 98.1% lasing is observed up to 190 K. The pulsed threshold power is 1.7 kW/cm2 at 80 K. The characteristic temperature is T0=113 K. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The demonstration of a room-temperature CdHgTe surface-emitting laser is reported. A planar heterostructure with two high-index contrast dielectric mirrors deposited after growth and after etching off the substrate has been realized. The emission wavelength of 1.57 μm is nearly independent of temperature (dλ/dT=0.02 nm/K) and the multimode linewidth is 10 meV. The pulsed threshold power is as low as 21 mW for a 300 μm spot. Lasing is observed up to 300 K and the peak output power exceeds 700 mW © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: SUMMARY. The oxygen uptake of Limnephilus rhombicus, a typical inhabitant of lentic waters, was measured in three different experimental situations: in still water with a plastic mesh as a substrate, in stirred water with a plastic mesh and in still water without any substrate. Water flow caused a small increase in oxygen uptake at all temperatures but principally above 15°C. The presence or absence of the plastic substrate had little influence on oxygen uptake; L. rhombicus can be active over the whole range of temperatures studied but its activity is always small. Its metabolism—temperature curve stands out in having a plateau between 5 and 10°C, with a steeper part between 10 and 20°C, the slope of which varies according to the conditions. Maximum oxygen uptake at high temperatures was relatively low (1235 ± 153 μl O2g dry wt-1h-1 at 25°C).The results are compared with those obtained previously for the larvae of Microptema testacea which inhabit flowing zones in brooks. L. rhombicus larvae appear both as cold-water animals and as animals from highly variable biotopes. They are in fact very ubiquitous and occupy all lentic biotopes from cold and mountainous districts to temperate lowlands.

    Notes: Serum cholinesterase activity was measured at induction, and following anaesthesia in 41 children aged between 4 and 30 months. The median exposure to sevoflurane was 273%.min. The results did not demonstrate any significant difference in cholinesterase activity, when expressed by gram of serum proteins following inhalation anaesthesia using sevoflurane or intravenous anaesthesia using propofol. The values (SD) obtained were 175 (42) UI.g−1 before anaesthesia and 177 (43) UI.g−1 following anaesthesia. The only change in cholinesterase activity detected was related to heamodilution. We conclude that plasma fluoride concentration following sevoflurane administration [13.8 (4.2) µm.l−1] is too low to exert an inhibiting effect on in vivo cholinesterase activity and that the previously reported decrease in mivacurium requirements during sevoflurane anaesthesia is unlikely to be due to inhibition by fluoride ions.

    Notes: Previous data have indicated low bone formation as a mechanism of osteoporosis in inflammatory bowel disease. Fluoride can stimulate bone formation.〈section xml:id="abs1-2"〉〈title type="main"〉Aim:To assess the effect of fluoride supplementation on lumbar spine bone mineral density in osteoporotic patients with inflammatory bowel disease treated in parallel with calcium and vitamin D.〈section xml:id="abs1-3"〉〈title type="main"〉Methods:In this prospective, randomized, double-blind, parallel and placebo-controlled study, 94 patients with inflammatory bowel disease (lumbar spine T score below − 2 standard deviations, normal serum 25OH vitamin D), with a median age of 35 years, were included. Bone mineral density was measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. Patients were randomized to receive daily either sodium monofluorophosphate (150 mg, n=45) or placebo (n=49) for 1 year, and all received calcium (1 g) and vitamin D (800 IU). The relative change in bone mineral density from 0 to 12 months was tested in each group (fluoride or placebo) and compared between the groups.〈section xml:id="abs1-4"〉〈title type="main"〉Results:Lumbar spine bone mineral density increased significantly in both groups after 1 year: 4.8 ± 5.6% (n=29) and 3.2 ± 3.8% (n=31) in the calcium–vitamin D–fluoride and calcium–vitamin D–placebo groups, respectively (P 〈 0.001 for each group). There was no difference between the groups (P=0.403). Similar results were observed according to corticosteroid intake or disease activity.〈section xml:id="abs1-5"〉〈title type="main"〉Conclusions:Calcium and vitamin D seem to increase lumbar spine density in osteoporotic patients with inflammatory bowel disease; fluoride does not provide further benefit.

    Notes: Diffusion experiments involving Pu–Cu, PuGa–Cu and PuGa–Ni couples, have brought into evidence the binary compounds PuCu2 and PuCu4, a ternary compound PuCu3 with variable small amounts of gallium and the ternary compounds Pu2Ni2Ga and PuNiGa. The crystalline parameters of these compounds were determined by the Debye–Scherrer method using alloys obtained by direct processing. Powder X-ray diffraction showed the isomorphism of PuCu2 with CeCu2 and that all the above compounds are orthorhombic.
