Notes: Abstract. Three-dimensional time-of-flight MR angiography was performed in 16 patients with Takayasu's arteritis. Two regions were evaluated, the arch of aorta and its intrathoracic major branches, and the abdominal aorta with proximal portions of its major visceral and renal branches. Individual arteries and aortic segments, i. e. aortic arch and abdominal aorta, were evaluated for abnormalities such as stenosis, occlusion, dilatation and aneurysm formation. The results were compared with contrast angiography. Follow-up MR angiography was performed in three patients after 9–12 months. MR angiography demonstrated steno-occlusive lesions in all the patients and aneurysms in 2. In comparison with contrast angiography, good correlation was found in 129 of the 145 arteries and aortic segments. For the 12 false-positive results, incorrect slab placement and overestimation of stenosis were implicated. Interestingly, there were three false-negative results and one occlusion was underestimated as stenosis. A new lesion developed in 1 patient and one stenosis progressed in another patient upon follow-up. Three-dimensional time-of-flight MR angiography is a simple and fairly accurate method for documenting the lesions in Takayasu's arteritis and for its follow-up.

Notes: Abstract Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging of the spine was performed as the initial imaging technique in 20 children when spinal dysraphism was suspected clinically and plain radiographs showed spina bifida. The correlation with surgical findings indicated that MR provided accurate information preoperatively in all the cases. Some unusual observations in cases with spina bifida cystica and occulta are discussed. It is concluded that plain radiograph and MR complete the preoperative radiologic evaluation of cases with spinal dysraphism.

Notes: The condensation of acetylacetone with anthranilic acid in presence of piperidine as the condensing agent gives acetylacetoneanthranilic acid SCHIFF'S base (H2AA) which forms complexes with Zinc (II) and Palladium (II). The dissociation constants of H2AA have been determined by interpolation at half n̄ values and also by algebraic method which give the values 4.85 and 8.25 at 30° ± 1 °C for the dissociation constants. The stability constants of Zinc (II) and Palladium (II) complexes have been determined adopting CALVIN and MELCHIOR'S extension of BJERRUM'S method and the values of log k1 are found to be 2.92 and 3.97 respectively at 30° ± 1 °C. In these complexes 1:1 metal-ligand stoichiometry is observed.

Notes: The proton magnetic resonance spectra have been measured between 4°K and their melting points for solid ortho, meta and para xylenes. It is found that lattices of these xylenes become rigid at about 4.2°K. The internal rotation of CH3 groups is observed at all temperatures above 95°K causing spectral narrowing.

Notes: Broad line NMR investigations on solid L-alanine have been carried out over the temperature range 77°K to 493°K. A comparison between the observed and theoretical values of the second moment has been made, to provide check on the crystal structure and to study the molecular motions. Investigations reveal the presence of NH3 group motion at about 230°K. The activation energy for NH3 group rotation has been computed to be 7.19 ± 1.0 kcal/mole. The crystal lattice remains rigid below 230°K. There is a possibility of torsional oscillation of the CH3 group at about 352°K.

Notes: The SCHIFF bases, 4-(2-hydroxy-ethylimino) pentane-2-one (abbr. HEA) und 1-[N-(2′-hydroxyethyl)iminomethyl]-2-naphthol (abbr. HNA) form solid complexes with Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II), Zn(II), Pd(II), Cd(II) and UO2(II). The elemental analyses, molecular weight, magnetic moment values and electronic spectral data have been used to establish the stoichiometry and structures of these compounds. Based on the studies it is concluded that Co(II), Zn(II) and Cd(II) complexes of these SCHIFF bases display tetrahedral structures whereas Pd(II) complexes exhibit a square-planar configuration. Cu(II) complexes of HEA and HNA are tetrahedral. Ni(II) complexes of HEA and HNA were found to possess octahedral and tetrahedral configurations, respectively.

Notes: Wide line NMR investigation of solid phloroglucinol has been made over the temperature range 77 °K to 400 °K at the radio frequency 7.5 Mc/s. It has been shown that the second moments (mean square width) of the spectra for the temperatures at which the lattice is effectively rigid, namely below 290 °K are consistent with the assumed model of phloroglucinol, thereby giving an NMR check of the molecular structure of the sample. The rotation of the molecule is observed at all temperatures above 290 °K and the correlation frequencies for molecular reorientation are found to be in excess of 105 Hz. The activation energy is found to be 23.04 kcal/mole.

Notes: Broad line NMR investigations of solid p-amino benzoic acid reveal the presence of intramolecular motion in solid state. The spectra were recorded in the temperature range from 77°K to the melting point of the sample (459°K). A transition was observed at about 330°K. From the temperature dependence of the second moment, this transition has been assigned to the rotation of the NH2 group about the C—N bond.
