Description / Table of Contents:
Notes:
In some titanium chloride-aluminum alkyl systems examined only TiCl4 and TiCl3—Al(C2H5)3 were found to be effective in cis-1,4 polymerization of isoprene; in cationic polymerization Al(C2H5)Cl2 gave a resinous product. The catalytic activity in cis-1,4 polymerization was strongly dependent on the starting mole ratios of aluminium to titanium and monomer to titanium. A peak in the activity was shown at about 1.3 of the Al/Ti ratio, and two peaks appeared at about 60 and 125 of monomer to titanium ratio. The polymerization has an activation energy of about 22 kcal./mole at constant catalyst level. The overall reaction appeared to be proportional to [Ti]02[M]. Two different types of copolymer were found from isoprene and styrene with TiCl4—Al(C2H5)3, suggesting a polyactivity of the catalyst system.
