Description / Table of Contents:
Notes:
The emulsion polymerization and copolymerization of styrene with or without emulsifiers, seeded or not, was investigated. The seed latex was prepared by emulsion polymerization without emulsifiers (for polystyrene), or in the presence of anionic emulsifiers (for polybutadiene and butadiene-α-methyl-styrene copolymer). The kinetic studies and particle size measurements proved the crucial role of the distribution of emulsifier molecules and of the polar groups at the polymer-water interface on particle formation.
