Notes: The polymerization of ARB type reversible step growth polymerization in semibatch reactors has been simulated. It is assumed that the condensation byproduct W and the monomer P1 both can vaporize, but P1 is refluxed back to the reactor. Raoults law as well as Flory-Huggins theory have been used to account for vapor-liquid equilibrium. The degree of polymerization, μn, and the polydispersity index DN have been computed for various situations. The results are found to be most sensitive to the total pressure and the equilibrium constant. A limiting total pressure history PT(T) has been obtained, going below which does not help to increase μn. The final set of equations incorporate both equalities as well as inequalities, and a simple and efficient computational scheme has been suggested to solve them.

Notes: Poly(butyl acrylate) has been graft copolymerized onto casein using potassium peroxydisulfate-ascorbic acid as the initiating system. The proof of grafting has been obtained by ninhydrin test and IR studies. The effects of synthetic variables in the graft copolymerization have been discussed in the light of percent grafting, grafting efficiency, and the rates of polymerization.

Notes: Polyacrylamide has been grafted onto casein in phosphate buffer medium using potassium peroxodisulfate as initiator. The influence of synthetic variables on percent grafting, grafting efficiency, rates of conversion of monomer, and the rates of graft copolymerization have been discussed. A possible kinetic scheme based on experimental results has been derived.

Notes: Copolymers of 2-hydroxyethylmethacrylate (HEMA) and glycidylmethacrylate (GMA) are useful for contact lenses. Copolymerization of HEMA and GMA was carried out in dimethylformamide medium using benzoylperoxide as initiator at 60°C. The composition of HEMA and GMA in copolymers was estimated using 13C-NMR. The reactivity ratio of HEMA and GMA was found to be r = 0.73 and r2 = 0.98 by Finemann-Ross method and r1 = 0.74 and r2= 1.00 by Kelen-Tudos methods. The experimental values are in close agreement with theoretical value determined from Q-e scheme.

Notes: The synthesis of casein-g-poly(methyl acrylate) was studied using the potassium peroxydisulfate-ascorbic acid redox system. The effect of synthetic variables has been investigated in the light of rates of conversion of monomer, graft copolymerization and homopolymerization, percent grafting, and grafting efficiency. The results are compared with the system initiated by pure potassium peroxydisulfate alone.

Notes: Poly(vinyl acetate) was graft-copolymerized onto casein in the presence of potassium peroxydisulfate-ascorbic acid. The effect of synthetic variables on the rates of conversion of monomer (Rp), graft copolymerization (Rg), and homopolymerization (Rh), percent grafting, and grafting efficiency were investigated and the results, compared with the system initiated by peroxydisulfate alone.
