Notes: Summary Polyurethane-polymethacrylic acid multi-block copolymers were synthesized from tetraphenylethane based polyurethane iniferter. Number of polymethacrylic acid blocks and molecular weight of block copolymers increased with increasing polymerization time which proves that the formation of block copolymers is through a “living” radical mechanism. The multi-block copolymers obtained were converted into their sodium anionomers. The multi-block copolymers and their anionomers have been characterized by FTIR, FTNMR and DSC analysis.

Notes: Summary Telechelic polyurethane cationomers containing end functional 4-vinylpyridinium moieties have been synthesized by the reaction of 4-vinylpyridine on 2-bromoethanol terminated polyurethane. The polyurethanes were characterized by FTIR, FTNMR and DSC studies. The introduction of ionic groups into the polyurethane shifts the Tg to lower temperatures, the shift in Tg further increases with increase in ionic groups.

Notes: Abstract Semi-Interpenetrating polymer networks (IPNs) of polyurethane anionomers (IPU) with Polyvinylchloride (PVC) were synthesized and characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectrophotometer (FT-IR), thremogravimetric analysis (TGA) and mechanical studies. The synthesized semi-IPNs were found to be compatible. The hydrogen bonding interactions and the thermal stabilities are discussed based on FT-IR analysis and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Tensile strength and hardness increase with increasing NCO/OH ratio and ionic content of the polyurethanes.

Description / Table of Contents: Es wurden Pfropfcopolymere durch Pfropfung von Ethylacrylat auf Gelatine hergestellt.
Notes: Graft copolymers were synthesized by grafting ethyl acrylate onto gelatin. The reaction was carried out in water-isopropanol medium (1:1 v/v). Reactions take place within 90 min. The resulting product is insoluble in solvents for the respective homopolymers. Presence of vinyl polymer was confirmed by IR spectra.

Notes: The syntheses of liquid-crystalline polyesters of biphenyl-4,4′-diol and 1,4-butanediol with adipic acid were carried out by varying the mole ratios of the two diols, keeping the total mole ratio of diacid to diols constant. Adipic acid was first converted into adipoyl dichloride, which was then reacted with the diol(s) in dimethylformamide. The resultant polyesters were characterized by means of 1H NMR and FT-IR spectroscopy, elemental analysis, thermogravimetric analysis and gel permeation chromatography. The liquid-crystalline behavior of the polyesters was studied by differential scanning calorimetry and hot-stage polarization microscopy.

Notes: A new class of urethane-acrylic monomers was synthesized from diisocyanates such as toluylene diisocyanate (TDI) and hexamethylene diisocyanate (HMDI), unsaturated alcohols like hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA), hydroxypropyl methacrylate (HPMA), and saturated alcohols such as stearly alcohol and decanol. The monomers were characterized by IR and NMR spectroscopy. Urethane pendent acrylic polymers, obtained by polymerizing these monomers, were characterized by IR, solubility viscosity, and thermal studies. The thermodynamic parameters for the degradation were calculated and a probable degradation mechanism is proposed.

Notes: Graft copolymerization of butyl acrylate onto gelatin has been carried out using potassium persulphate as initiator both in aqueous and in water-acetic acid medium. Kinetic parameters like rate of grafting, percent grafting, and grafting efficiency were determined for the two systems. The grafting was proved by IR spectra of the isolated graft chains which showed amide absorption bands characteristic for the amino acids.

Notes: Polyurethane and polyurethane cationomers were synthesized using 2,3-dihydroxypyridine and 2,3-dihydroxypyridine hydrochloride as chain extenders. Poly(butyl methacrylate-co-methacrylic acid) was synthesized by free radical solution polymerization and was converted into its sodium salt. The polyurethane cationomer and the acrylic anionomer were blended in different proportions in N,N-dimethylformamide. Simple blends without ionic groups were also prepared. Miscibility enhancement in these systems was studied by means of differential scanning calorimetry and scanning electron microscopy.

Notes: Gelatin a derived protein from collagen can be modified at 60°C by allowing it to react with ethyl acrylate by use of a novel initiator technique. The polymeric ethyl acrylate side chain is chemically bonded to gelatin. The effects of synthetic variable in the graft copolymerization reactions have been discussed in the light of percent grafting, grafting efficiency, and the rate of polymerization.
