    Notes: The morphology of particles (I) produced by seeded emulsion copolymerization of styrene (S) and sodium p-styrene sulfonate (NaSS) with butyl acrylate (BA)-methacryloyloxyethyl-trimethylammonium chloride (QDM) copolymer particles as seed was examined in comparison with poly(butyl acrylate) (PBA)-polystyrene (PS) composite polymer emulsion particles (II). In an electron microscopic observation, it was observed that II particles had an anomalous shape and the electron densities at different points in the particle were heterogeneous, whereas I particles had an almost spherical shape and the electron densities were homogeneous. The maximum tensile strength and toughnes were much larger in II than I. The dynamic mechanical studies indicate that II film had a macroheterogeneous structure consisting of PS-rich and PBA-rich phases, whereas I film had a microheterogeneous structure. These ressults suggest that there is an effect of intermolecular interaction between polymers of different kinds on the formation of heterogeneous structure in particles consisting of two kinds of polymers.

    Notes: It was studied how to localize carboxyl groups at the particle surface in a preparation of styrene (S)/butyl acrylate (BA)/methacrylic acid (MAA) polymer emulsion. The relative distribution of carboxyl groups in the emulsion was determined by conductometric titration method: in serum, at surface, and inside particle. By seeded (two-stage) emulsion polymerization that S-BA-MAA terpolymer emulsion was first prepared at low pH and then second stage polymerization of S-BA was continued at high pH, S/BA/MAA polymer emulsion particles in which carboxyl groups are localized predominantly at the surface could be prepared.

    Notes: The effect of the filler silica particle size on the properties of integrated circuits (IC) packages sealed with an epoxy molding compound was studied. For this purpose, two kinds of epoxy molding compounds filled with irregular-shaped silica particles having mean sizes of (A) 16 μm and (B) 5 μm were prepared. The fracture toughness (Kc) of cured A was higher than that of cured B, but the flexural strength of cured A was lower than that of cured B, i.e., cured A and B had opposite physical properties. The thermal shock test was carried out in which IC packages were repeatedly dipped alternately in -65 and 150°C liquids and package cracking was observed. The thermal shock property of the IC package sealed with A was superior to that sealed with B. There was a good relationship between the thermal shock test property and Kc value. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: Two kinds of anionic polymer emulsions with different particle sizes were blended and cast on a release-paper at 30°C. One was poly(butyl acrylate) emulsion, and the other was ethyl acrylate-methyl methacrylate (1 : 1, weight ratio) copolymer emulsion. They were produced by emulsifier-free emulsion polymerization. The blend films prepared in an appropriate range of the blend ratio had a great difference in tackiness between both surfaces: The air-side surface exhibited tackiness and the release-paper side showed nontackiness. The forming mechanism is discussed.

    Notes: Effect of particle size on the mechanical properties of cured epoxy resins has been studied. Resin was filled with angular-shaped silica particles prepared by crushing fused natural raw quartz. These particles were sorted into six groups having different mean sizes ranging from 2-47 μm. Flexural and compressive moduli of the cured epoxy resin slightly decreased with decrease in the particle size of the silica, whereas tensile modulus slightly increased. Flexural and tensile strengths increased with decrease in particle size. Fractured surfaces were observed using scanning electron microscopy to clarify the initiation point of fracture.

    Notes: The adsorption onto polymer microspheres of bovine fibrinogen (BFb) containing both dimeric and monomeric species was examined using various homopolymer, copolymer, and poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate)/polystyrene composite microspheres which were produced by the emulsifier-free (seeded) emulsion polymerization technique. The preferential adsorption of the BFb dimer was clearly observed in an optimum region of the surface hydrophilicities of the polymer microspheres. The preferential adsorption of the BFb dimer onto the composite polymer microspheres having heterogeneous surfaces with both hydrophilic and hydrophobic parts was more remarkable than that onto the homopolymer and copolymer microspheres having homogeneous surfaces. The behavior is discussed in comparison with those for bovine serum albumin and human γ-globulin.

This resin was filled with spherical silica particles prepared by hydrolysis of silicon tetrachloride. Particles were sorted into five kinds of different mean sizes in the range from 6-42 μm. A static flexural and tensile tests and an instrumented Charpy type impact test were carried out. Flexural strength, tensile strength, and impact-absorbed energy increased with a decrease in the particle size. Fractured surfaces were observed using a scanning electron microscope to clarify the initiation point of fracture.

    Notes: A cured epoxy resin is modified with polybutyl acrylate (A) and polyethyl acrylate (B) produced by in situ ultraviolet radiation polymerizations of their corresponding monomers in the epoxy resin, respectively, to reduce the internal stress. In the A system, a heterogeneous structure with submicron domains was formed. In the B system, however, the B mixed well with the epoxy matrix. In both systems, the internal stress was decreased by the modification. The glass transition temperature of the epoxy matrix decreased in the B system more than in the A system. The A-modified resin was superior to the B-modified resin in reducing the internal stress without decreasing the thermal resistance of epoxy resin.

    Notes: Emulsifier-free emulsion polymerization of styrene in acetone-water medium was carried out using potassium persulfate as initiator. Below acetone content of 40 vol %, stable emulsion was prepared and polymerizations were remarkably fast compared with those in pure water. The particle size decreased from 0.5 to 0.17 μm with an increase in acetone content in the range 0-40 vol %, and the distributions were very sharp. The optimum polymerization for the preparation of the stable emulsion was: styrene, 20 vol %; acetone/water, 40/60 (v/v); KPS, 3.4 × 10-3 mole/l; temp., 90°C.
