    Notes: Abstract In order to reduce the internal stress of cured epoxy resin generated by shrinkage in the cooling process from cure temperature to room temperature, two kinds of acrylic polymers were introduced byin situ UV radiation polymerization prior to curing. Polybutyl acrylate (A) and butyl acrylate-monoethylene glycol dimethacrylate copolymer (molar ratio 95∶5) (B) were used as the acrylic polymer. In the A-modified resin, a heterogeneous structure with spherical submicrometre domains were formed. In the B-modified resin, irregularly shaped submicrometre domains in which the microphase separation occurred were observed. The modulus of cured epoxy resin decreased as a result of the modifications, and was lower in the B-modified resin than in the A-modified resin. Therefore the internal stress decreased more effectively in the B-modified resin.

    Notes: The effect of epoxy groups at the surface layer of ethyl acrylate-glycidyl methacrylate copolymer (1) emulsion particles on its crosslinking reactivity has been investigated. For this purpose two series of I emulsions were prepared. In the Y series, of which emulsion particles have epoxy groups at the surface layer, the epoxy content in the polymerization recipe was varied. For preparing the X series, of which emulsion particles have few epoxy groups at the surface layer, the high epoxy content of a given emulsion was reduced by various degrees of cleavage reaction with HCl-CaCl2. In emulsion blend films with amine-group-containing copolymer (II) emulsion, where the crosslinking reaction was expected to proceed only at the interfacial layer of I and II emulsion particles, the Y series, compared to the X series at the equal overall epoxy content in particles, showed less swelling and higher gel fraction in dioxane, less swelling in water, and higher tensile strength and modulus. On the other hand, this difference was not observed in the next two crosslinked films in which crosslinking was expected to be homogeneous. First, blends of I and II, which were isolated from the corresponding emulsions discussed above, were cast from dioxane solutions. Second, I emulsions were cast with BF3 ether complex which was expected to penetrate into the particles. It is concluded that the response of I emulsion cleaving the epoxy groups at the surface layer of particles to subsequent interfacial crosslinking is obviously reduced. However, even such an emulsion can be crosslinked to an extent similar to that of an uncleaved emulsion with similar overall epoxy content, if the crosslinking reaction is conducted so as to give an homogeneous effect.

    Notes: The formation mechanism of an “asymmetric” porous structure for the film cast from ethyl acrylate-methyl methacrylate copolymer emulsion prepared by emulsifire-free emulsion polymerization was investigated. The formation of this structure was affected by the emulsion stability which was varied by the postaddition of sodium sulfate or sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate. It is concluded that it is derived from the production of porous skin film at the emulsion-air interface and the precipitation of flocculated particles at the bottom of emulsion during drying process.

    Notes: The occupied area (Am) of a sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate molecule adsorbed on particles was measured by the soap titration method. The Am values are 214, 133, and 53 Å2 for poly(methyl acrylate) (I), poly(methyl methacrylate) (II), and polystyrene (III), respectively. For methyl metharylate-styrene copolymer emulsions the additivity was established between the Am value and copolymer composition. Composite emulsion particles consisting of I/II, I/III, and II/III were prepared by seeded emulsion polymerization. For these emulsions the relationship between polymer composition at the surface layer calculated from the Am value and that in a particle calculated from the polymerization process was investigated. This relationship is remarkably affected by the order of polymerization, the hydrophilicity of polymer, the flexibility of the seed polymer, and the monomer addition method. The models of the morphology of these composite particles explain the results successfully.

    Notes: Emulsifier-free emulsion polymerization of styrene in acetone-water medium was carried out using potassium persulfate as initiator. Below acetone content of 40 vol %, stable emulsion was prepared and polymerizations were remarkably fast compared with those in pure water. The particle size decreased from 0.5 to 0.17 μm with an increase in acetone content in the range 0-40 vol %, and the distributions were very sharp. The optimum polymerization for the preparation of the stable emulsion was: styrene, 20 vol %; acetone/water, 40/60 (v/v); KPS, 3.4 × 10-3 mole/l; temp., 90°C.

    Notes: Poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate)/polystyrene (PHEMA/PS) composite microspheres were produced by emulsifier-free seeded emulsion polymerization for styrene in the presence of PHEMA seed particles. Effects of the surface characteristics of the PHEMA/PS composite microspheres on the adsorption immobilization of trypsin and on its enzymatic activity were discussed. Above 5 mol% of HEMA content, trypsin molecules adsorbed had high activity, 65-100% of the activity of free trypsin. The excellence of the composite microspheres as a carrier for trypsin seems to be closely related with the surface heterogeneity consisting of both hydrophilic and hydrophobic parts.

    Notes: Effect of particle size on the mechanical properties of cured epoxy resins has been studied. Resin was filled with angular-shaped silica particles prepared by crushing fused natural raw quartz. These particles were sorted into six groups having different mean sizes ranging from 2-47 μm. Flexural and compressive moduli of the cured epoxy resin slightly decreased with decrease in the particle size of the silica, whereas tensile modulus slightly increased. Flexural and tensile strengths increased with decrease in particle size. Fractured surfaces were observed using scanning electron microscopy to clarify the initiation point of fracture.

    Notes: The adsorption onto polymer microspheres of bovine fibrinogen (BFb) containing both dimeric and monomeric species was examined using various homopolymer, copolymer, and poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate)/polystyrene composite microspheres which were produced by the emulsifier-free (seeded) emulsion polymerization technique. The preferential adsorption of the BFb dimer was clearly observed in an optimum region of the surface hydrophilicities of the polymer microspheres. The preferential adsorption of the BFb dimer onto the composite polymer microspheres having heterogeneous surfaces with both hydrophilic and hydrophobic parts was more remarkable than that onto the homopolymer and copolymer microspheres having homogeneous surfaces. The behavior is discussed in comparison with those for bovine serum albumin and human γ-globulin.

    Notes: Two kinds of anionic polymer emulsions with different particle sizes were blended and cast on a release-paper at 30°C. One was poly(butyl acrylate) emulsion, and the other was ethyl acrylate-methyl methacrylate (1 : 1, weight ratio) copolymer emulsion. They were produced by emulsifier-free emulsion polymerization. The blend films prepared in an appropriate range of the blend ratio had a great difference in tackiness between both surfaces: The air-side surface exhibited tackiness and the release-paper side showed nontackiness. The forming mechanism is discussed.
